One thing I'm proudly is that none of #KimJiwon's characters are forgotten and she's such a good actress that not only her new work but also her past works are constantly praised. The women she ensouled are the best. KJW, you will always be famous! 💅👑

Did Gye save Taegyeong’s life in their past life or do a huge favor for him? Because the way he cares about Gye, he’d literally give his life for her. But I like him so much 🥹

The Korean version didn’t try to copy the original—it made the character its own. Recreating the same character is easy; taking them somewhere new is the hard part. Jiwon absolutely owned it. I love how Doctor X has become our new obsession. 💅🏻
{NEWS} “By adding a distinctly Korean narrative to the original’s satisfying appeal, its popularity continues to soar.”
SBS’s drama Doctor X is gaining momentum as a hit.
- Peak viewership rating surpasses 20% just four episodes into its run.
- It sets itself apart as a “medical noir,” combining the exploits of a genius surgeon with elements of mystery.
A genius surgeon who refuses to bow to institutional authority has captured the hearts of television viewers.
SBS’s Friday–Saturday drama Doctor X: Mafia in White (hereafter Doctor X) has kicked off its early success with a satisfying and exhilarating storyline. According to Nielsen Korea, the drama continued its impressive ratings streak, recording a nationwide viewership rating of 18.5% and a peak rating exceeding 20% with just its fourth episode, which aired on October 17.
It has also achieved notable success on Netflix. According to FlixPatrol, a website that tracks rankings of OTT (over-the-top) streaming content, Doctor X ranked No. 1 in Netflix Korea’s Top 10 TV Shows for two consecutive weeks as of October 19. It entered the Top 10 in 61 countries worldwide, ranking No. 1 in 18 of them, including South Korea. The drama also placed fourth in the global TV show rankings.
Analysts attribute the drama’s growing popularity in part to its distinctly Korean storytelling, which retains the original Japanese series’ strong protagonist while weaving together power struggles within the medical establishment and the protagonist’s past.
Doctor X is a medical drama about Gye Su Jeong (Kim Ji Won), a freelance surgeon with exceptional surgical skills who takes on corruption and powerful forces within the medical establishment. The series is based on the Japanese drama Doctor-X: Surgeon Michiko Daimon, which has produced seven seasons since its debut in 2012.
Doctor X retains the original series’ premise of a genius surgeon who operates independently of any organization, but places hospital power struggles and corruption at the forefront, embracing what is known as the “medical noir” genre. Beyond conflicts surrounding surgeries, the competing interests of hospital personnel and their struggles for power form a central part of the story. Unlike the original, which focused on resolving individual cases in each episode, the Korean adaptation sustains a mystery surrounding the protagonist’s past, leaving viewers eager to discover what happens next. The hidden wounds Gye Su Jeong has kept buried and the gradually emerging truth behind the “White Mafia” heighten the tension.
Another distinguishing feature that sets the drama apart from conventional medical series is its portrayal of a woman who solves problems through her own skills and judgment, without relying on romance. Many viewers have become captivated by Gye Su Jeong as she refuses to be bound by hierarchy or authority and delivers satisfying, no-nonsense remarks that challenge the powerful establishment. Kim Ji Won, who is taking on the medical genre in earnest for the first time with this project, adds depth to the character by contrasting her unwavering resolve in the face of power with her inner wounds.
Doctor X combines the tension of surgical procedures with the exhilarating satisfaction of standing up to powerful institutions, allowing even viewers unfamiliar with the original series to become easily immersed in the story.
Popular culture critic Park Song Ah commented, “While the original excelled at providing viewers with vicarious satisfaction through the exploits of a genius surgeon, the Korean adaptation has given audiences an emotional reason to connect with those exploits as well. Its strategy of transforming a familiar original into a fresh story for Korean viewers stands out.”
