Early Weight-bearing vs. Delayed Weight-bearing After Ankle Fracture Surgery: A Non-Inferiority RCT
Recently published in @TheLancet

Research Question
How does early (2 weeks) weight-bearing compare to delayed weight-bearing (6 weeks) for patients recovering from ankle fracture surgery?

Results
Ankle Function: early weight-bearing was not only found to be non-inferior to delayed weight-bearing, but superior at 6 weeks and 4 months follow-up!

Quality of Life: the early weight-bearing group demonstrated significantly better quality of life at 6 weeks follow-up.

Complications: the rate of complications was similar in both groups.

Cost-effectiveness: early weight-bearing was found to be the dominant strategy, resulting in lower costs and higher quality of life gains!

Takeaway
Early weight-bearing is non-inferior and highly likely to be cost-effective compared to delayed weight-bearing for patients recovering from ankle fracture surgery!
