All of a sudden, the narrative now is that Yorubas hate Igbos? I donโt need to explain whatโs really happening here. This is a calculated smear campaign against the Yoruba people because a Yoruba man defeated an Igbo candidate.
I wouldnโt have paid much attention if it were coming from faceless accounts. But when prominent Igbo and Obidient voices consistently amplify this propaganda without any sane Igbo voices pushing back, itโs genuinely sad to watch. It simply means a significant number of you have this mindset toward the Yoruba people. The idea of Nigeria as one united nation is a script we cannot continue to play.
Almost every trending conversation about Yoruba people online now involves ridiculing our culture, distorting historical facts, recycling stereotypes, or spreading outright lies.
Iโve had the privilege of traveling and experiencing different cultures across Nigeria. I can say with confidence and I suspect even those pushing these narratives know this that the Yoruba remain one of the most welcoming and accommodating groups in the country. The only people who compare favourably in my experience are the various groups from Plateau State. As Yorubas, we donโt need external validation to know who we are.
To those actively fanning these repulsive narratives and framing every issue as a Yoruba vs Igbo contest: stop! The consequences will extend far beyond Tinubuโs tenure. I assure you and whatever happens, Yorubas will not be the victim.
You can dislike President Tinubu โ he is your President, and you are fully within your rights to criticize him.
You can dislike the APC โ that is your prerogative.
You can even dislike Nigerian politicians as a whole โ that is entirely your business.
But the line is crossed when:
โ You transfer that political anger toward the Yoruba people.
โ You disguise your dislike for certain politicians or parties as an excuse to attack Yoruba professionals, religious or traditional leaders, artists, businesspeople, or any Yoruba individual simply because of their identity.
That will no longer be tolerated. And it will be firmly and confidently resisted.
To all Yoruba silent observers who stay behind the keyboard and watch all manner of rhetoricโs flying around about us.
Rhetorics like lazy, dirty, ugly, too beautiful to be Yoruba, coward, betrayals, slaves, razz, loud-mouthed, and many more.
I was once a silent observer and let all the rhetorics fly and do nothing.
I STOPPED. Not anymore, not in my watch.
These rhetorics have been internalized far too long by some young Yoruba as evident in the Yoruba-buts.
My children will come and ready about Yoruba here and whatever they read will shape their opinion.
I will use my pen to rewrite history on here.
Bigotry against the Yoruba is quietly tolerated, but the second there is a reprisal, everyone suddenly finds their moral compass.
It is not only a double standard, it is weaponised civility used as a tool of social control to silence a targeted group. A classic bullying tactic.
