Colbert did nothing to stop the Iraq invasion and made a name for himself off it, then went on to flack for the establishment in a million ways. He’s now set himself up to do an online platform, like Tucker Carlson did when he left Fox. This has the effect of squeezing out actual good people online — comedian @LeeCamp just had to scale back his output bc he’s so suppressed online (as I am).
Never forget that Ronald Reagan tripled the national debt from $738 billion to $2.1 trillion, dropped the income tax rate on the top 1% from 70% to 28%, sold 500 missiles to Iran, let 90,000 Americans die of AIDS, and set into motion the end of mental institutions, creating a massive homelessness crisis that continues to this day. And he’s not even close to the worst president we’ve ever had.
“Democracy in America was never the same as Liberty in Europe. In Europe Liberty was a great life-throb. But in America Democracy was always something anti-life.
The greatest democrats, like Abraham Lincoln, had always a sacrificial, self-murdering note in their voices.
American Democracy was a form of self-murder, always. Or of murdering somebody else... The love, the democracy, the floundering into lust, is a sort of by-play.
The essential American soul is hard, isolate, stoic, and a killer. It has never yet melted.”

depaul coming up with $42 million for their new basketball facilities and then immediately proceeding to close their art museum and student theater is a pretty scathing indictment of the institution and also society as a whole
FOH with the prospect talk like they didn’t just pay Kyle Tucker $60M a year to be their fifth‑best hitter. The Dodgers are the best team in baseball because their payroll sits in its own tax bracket, miles above almost every other franchise, full stop.
They have unlimited financial resources, so they’re not forced for trade prospects as much as other teams. When they do move someone good, it doesn’t matter. They can cover any mistake with another massive, deferred contract without blinking.
The only meaningful difference between them and other well‑run teams is the budget. They’re the Rays with a stack of blank checks. They’ve drafted and developed very few true stars in the last decade; they bought the rest.
Any conversation that ignores their spending is disingenuous at best. Stop acting like they’re some feel‑good story built on plucky underdogs and homegrown talent.
"The one that really got me was Rubber Soul, which came out at the end of 1965. Rubber Soul is probably the greatest record ever.
"It came out in December of 1965 and sent me right to the piano bench. It’s a whole album of Beatles folk songs, a whole album where everything flows together and everything works. I said, 'How could they possibly make an album where the songs all sound like they come from the same place.' I couldn't deal with it. It blew my mind. It wasn’t just the lyrics and the melodies but the production and their harmonies. They had such unique harmonies, you know? [It was] almost art music . . . I thought, 'Damn it, I've got to do that. I've got to try that with the Beach Boys.'
"You could hear their ideas so clearly in their music. They didn’t pose like some other bands. They were great poets about simple things, and that also made it easier to hear the song. And they never did anything clumsy. It was like perfect pitch, but for entire songs. Everything landed on its feet.
"Pet Sounds is a good album, but not the best. I think Rubber Soul is still the best album of all time. Maybe other people consider me a genius, but I don’t, not on their level."

The schools that had the most prevalent protests - including Columbia where I work - either suspended or expelled most of the students protesting Israel's genocide of Gaza. One of my former students has a 3 year (!!!) suspension.
Then, the schools enacted rules making protest nearly impossible. And the very people who pressured the schools to do this are now saying "Where are all the protests?".
Idiots.
"I heard Joni Mitchell say, 'Everybody's a songwriter, even people who shouldn't be.' It's true. It was as true in 1963 as it is today. People heard the Beatles and said, 'Oh, I could do that!' Actually, no, you couldn't. You couldn't write 'She Loves You,' let alone 'For No One' or 'Girl.' It's the same today. A lot of people who can sort of write songs screw up their ears and tell themselves it's something special. But it's not really.
"Lennon, McCartney and Harrison had stunningly high standards as writers. Imagine releasing a song like 'Ask Me Why' or 'Things We Said Today' as a B side. They made such fantastic records as 'Penny Lane' b/w 'Strawberry Fields Forever' and only put them out as singles! These records were events, and not just advance notice of an album release.
"You can’t really put onto the page what is great about 'And Your Bird Can Sing' or 'Paperback Writer' or even a great overlooked hard rock Beatles cut like 'Hey Bulldog.' Ok, you can break it down to this remarkable guitar part, those weirdly tracked, overlapping vocal harmonies or Lennon’s insanely intense delivery of an almost throwaway cut and even remark that the piano part is a relative of 'Lady Madonna.' But this doesn’t begin to explain how these records make me feel. That is beyond words."

god I hate this faux populist bullshit. K-12 is also free for rich people, as are public parks, the fire dept, libraries etc. Study after study shows means testing is the quickest way to gut programs for the rich AND the poor because it erodes the public base of support.
@brianschatz Brian can you give specific dates when it’s ok to criticize Democrats for failing at their primary reason for existing which is preventing ascendant fascism? Last Oct you said that wasnt a good time so I’m curious. This isn’t sarcasm, I’d like an actual date so we can circle back
