Consumers fell massively out of love with the SEGA brand after the respective failures of Saturn, 32X, Mega CD, Game Gear...
A major loss of trust was a big factor in the downfall, I believe.
And evidence with regards to that, is that we had many what I would call die-hard fans, jumping ship altogether. SEGA needed these fans as the base to build.
And while they had undeniably, one of the greatest launches of all-time, it wasn't enough to stop the rot setting in, once the other competitors joined the battle.
If SEGA still had the market share and the support of consumers like they had after the Genesis / Mega Drive era, there's no doubt in my mind, that the Dreamcast would have been a commercial success.
