"The camera became, as you know, almost an actor. When the actors are performing, they are performing to the camera and I happen to be reflecting what the actor is feeling and what he is seeing.”

He also used to work a lot from storyboards ; now he is more spontaneous. We both enjoy working on instinct, making spur-of-the-moment decisions." 3/3

"#StevenSpielberg gives me tremendous freedom. I think what I give him is more flexibility in terms of lighting, allowing him a greater range of options with the actors and the way the camera can move. 1/3
#JanuszKaminski
I think I also bring a slightly rawer sensibility to the cinematography in his films ; before we started working together, Steven was know for the way he always used backlight which automatically romanticises a scene, makes everything pretty and sentimental. 2/3

"Steven Spielberg likes to work fast. He hates waiting for the lighting, a sentiment I share. I will always sacrifice perfect lighting for the sake of maintaining energy on set. 1/2
#JanuszKaminski#StevenSpielberg
If the actors have to wait for two hours while the director of photography lights the set, it’s too long, they lose the momentum. If you can work fast, it creates a sense of continuity, it means the director and the actors can work more from their intuition." 2/2

#JanuszKaminski on #SchindlersList : "I used yellow #15 and orange #21 to brighten skin tones. The principals in black-and-white are as such: if you have a red object and you apply a red filter, the red object will become lighter. 1/3
#StevenSpielberg
Because most people's faces have a lot of orange, when you apply an orange filter, it neutralizes the orange, making the face appear lighter. 2/3
#JanuszKaminski#SchindlersList#StevenSpielberg
With red filters you have to be careful. We used red #23 on occasion, but the faces became too bright and the lips became too dark. Lips have a lot of blue in them and red accentuates this while increasing the contrast." 3/3
