I was travelling through the hills recently. Cold winds, silent roads, tiny tea stalls at every turn.

One thing caught my attention immediately. Almost every local was smoking Bidi. Hardly saw anyone holding a Cigarette.

Curious, I asked an old shopkeeper, “Why nobody smokes Cigarettes here?”

He smiled and replied,

“Bhai saab, Cigarettes have become a luxury now.”

Then he pointed towards the counter.

Cigarette packet, 10 sticks: ₹300 to ₹480

Bidi packet, 20 sticks: ₹20 to ₹25

He said, “Earlier labourers, drivers, even small farmers used to buy Cigarettes occasionally. Now people calculate every rupee before spending. So they shifted to Bidi. Cheap, strong, and affordable.”

Standing there, I realised something.

Price rise does not just change lifestyles. It changes habits. It changes choices. It slowly pushes people from comfort to compromise.

When people downgrade even their smoking from Cigarettes to Bidi because of affordability, imagine the pressure on food, education, healthcare and daily survival.
