One day you’re gonna wake up and AAU basketball will be over. No more weekend tournaments, packed gyms, or team hotels. No more “one more game” next weekend.
One day you’ll be out of eligibility for high school basketball. Then college basketball too.
And eventually, the thing that feels like your whole world right now becomes a memory.
So stop playing scared. Shoot your shot. Sprint the floor. Dive on the loose ball. Compete with confidence. Enjoy your teammates. Because one day you’ll wish you could go back and play just one more game with them.
Fear and hesitation have ended way more careers than missed shots ever will.
Just something to think about.
AAU coaches 5th grade and under: I know this won’t be popular to say but I wish you wouldn’t press. It’s bad basketball and not good for developing players. And it’s not realistic at the highest levels. You have 3rd graders pressing the whole game. To win, I guess. It’s awful.
I coached in a Conf where there was BIG discrepancy in talent. So our pressing got a LOT of buckets!
But when I coached higher levels or in Conf where talent was similar, if we weren’t efficient offensively in halfcourt, we weren’t beating the best teams.
Hear what I’m saying🤔
Maybe an unpopular take but…stop making teenagers wake up at 5am to go lift/workout before school.
Unless they’re asleep by 9pm, I promise you that them getting 8 hours of sleep will be more beneficial for them than some 45 minute workout before school.
HS sports used to be High School Sports! We’ve turned it into a college prep program.
We’ve excluded late bloomers, multi sport athletes, kids truly wanting a HS sports experience. We’ve force travel sports down their throats. HS sports isn’t college prep- it’s HS Sports!
@coachvonzell1 I think a big reason is because there are so many teams and clubs now that it’s not really “select basketball”. It’s “anyone can play” basketball. Which also means anyone can coach basketball (main problem), and unfortunately A LOT of them can’t and that’s ruining things.
