VIDEO | Srinagar: Reacting to Prime Minister Narendra Modi's X post on the ongoing students' protest, Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah says, “At some point, the government will have to sit down and talk to the students. You cannot ignore such a large number of young people. I think the Central government initially underestimated the movement. When the CJP held its first protest at Jantar Mantar and only a few people turned up, some began mocking it, saying that while they had millions of supporters on social media, they could not bring people onto the streets. But the situation in Delhi today speaks for itself. A significant part of New Delhi has come to a standstill, and even last night, tear gas had to be used around Jantar Mantar. This clearly shows there is widespread anger among the youth, and that anger has been ignored until now. It is a positive step that the Prime Minister, through his post, has acknowledged the importance of the youth. The next step should be to engage with them and address their concerns through dialogue."

Srinagar, Jammu and Kashmir: On Prime Minister Narendra Modi's tweet regarding fast-track courts to hear paper leak cases, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah says, "At some point, you have to sit down and talk with them. You cannot ignore so many young people. I think, somewhere, when the CJP's first protest program was held at Jantar Mantar, only a few people had turned up. Some people started making fun of it, saying, 'Look, no one is with them. Millions of people are on social media, but these people are only on social media.'.. Now, it is a good thing that the Prime Minister, through his post, has conveyed that young people are important. It would be a good thing if their concerns are taken seriously and they are engaged in a dialogue about those concerns"

We witnessed a similar situation after the Pahalgam terror attack, when several houses were demolished. At that time, I spoke to the Central government and urged it to stop those actions. Later, when the investigation was completed, it emerged that not a single local resident was involved in the attack, all the attackers had come from outside. Demolishing houses or carrying out arrests on such a large scale will not improve the situation. On the contrary, it could make matters worse. From my own experience of governing Jammu and Kashmir for six years, when we were still a state and the police was under our control, I learned that this problem cannot be resolved without taking the people along...”
