The Siege of Leningrad has always troubled me as a European.

Hitler basically ordered the city erased from the earth…

Encircle it completely, bombard with every caliber of shell and constant air raids, starve the population into oblivion, and reject any offer of surrender.

Our continent answered the call with grim enthusiasm.

Spain’s Blue Division held sectors south of the city and bled fiercely at Krasny Bor.

Finnish forces sealed the northern approaches.

Norwegians, Dutch, Belgians and scattered volunteers from across the West filled Wehrmacht and SS ranks.

Old hatreds and twisted ideology drove them forward as part of a wider European complicity.

It still failed spectacularly.

Over a million civilians perished on rations cut to 125 grams of bread amid savage cold and relentless shelling.

Yet the improvised “Road of Life” across frozen Lake Ladoga delivered vital supplies and evacuated over a million souls despite constant attacks and cracking ice.

The defenders soldiers and ordinary people alike drew on a collective endurance born of existential stakes that a divided, exhausted Europe could not match.

We are watching the same pattern unfold in Ukraine today.

Sanctions designed as economic siege, proxy forces, and endless pressure were supposed to crack Russia quickly.

Instead it absorbs the punishment, relocates production, maintains cohesion, and holds its ground.

The same elite miscalculation repeats…

Underestimating a civilizational depth and will that outlasts fragile coalitions built on short-term fervor and outsourced fighting.

It leaves me deeply uneasy as a European.

We keep repeating the old arrogance, preferring comfortable narratives over hard lessons.

Empires and coalitions that refuse to understand their adversary’s resilience eventually break themselves.

We ignore this at our own peril.

Whatever one thinks of integration itself, this process is indefensible.

Binding American defense production to any foreign state, ally or not, is exactly the kind of sovereignty question the House exists to debate, and the rules committee answered it by forbidding the debate.

A measure confident of its merits wins a floor vote; a measure smuggled past one admits it can't.

Today marks the 84th anniversary of the beginning of one of the largest deportation actions of the Holocaust.

It was bad from the beginning. In 1939, Warsaw's Jews were stripped of their rights, robbed, humiliated, forced into labour, and locked inside the Warsaw Ghetto.

Then it got worse.

30% of the city's population was crammed into just 2.5% of its area. Hunger, disease, and death became everyday life. Children smuggled food because adults couldn't.

The Germans launched the Grossaktion.

For the next two months, more than 250,000 Jews were deported from the Umschlagplatz to Treblinka, where most were murdered within hours of arrival.
