I’m seeing so many posts praising teams for their championships and success. Coaches and fan professing how inspired and proud they are, that their team battled while displaying grit and toughness. The confetti and trophies and hype are what we all live for. What it’s all about.

But what about all the others? D1 Sports is HARD. And there are so many teams out there who worked just as hard, overcame a lot of adversity but fell short of their ultimate goal. There were teams that suffered multiple season ending injuries which subterfuges their season. There were teams who barely recorded any wins in games that could have gone either way. There were teams that had their whole season decided by a single shot and the width of the crossbar. Those teams and coaches deserve a ton of praise too. Winning is the easy part of sports. Losing and failing to get results will be the biggest test of what you’re really made of, and sometimes those players are battling just as hard overcoming obstacles know one realizes.

When our season fell short of getting a Ring, we told them how proud we were of the season they put together. Because the ultimate goal is building and cultivating a team that is “Ring Worthy”—-one that we absolutely knew had all the pieces to compete for the championship. Getting the title becomes a bonus.

Post season is a staunch reminder that every single team in the country except one will end their season on a bad note: either failing to make playoffs or a loss. But all these lessons learned from falling short and losing are why athletes tend to cope so well out in the real world. Congrats to all the champs and congrats to all the rest of you who also battled through the grind of a college soccer season, becoming stronger and experiencing some valuable growth, even if not so apparent at the moment.
