SPARTANBURG, SOUTH CAROLINA Two men, Lawson Berry “L.B.” Watson (Wright’s cousin and a former sheriff’s office employee) and Amos Durham (former sheriff’s office chaplain), were sentenced Thursday, July 9, 2026, in federal court in Greenville, South Carolina, before U.S. District Judge Timothy M. Cain.
This followed the Tuesday, July 7, sentencing of former Spartanburg County Sheriff Charles “Chuck” Wright (age 61, of Wellford), who received the maximum 41 months in federal prison under the plea agreement guidelines, plus three years of supervised release and roughly $463,000 in restitution.
The three pleaded guilty in October 2025 to federal charges stemming from a years-long public corruption scheme that defrauded Spartanburg County taxpayers.
The federal investigation (led by the FBI and SLED) has now concluded with these sentencings.
➡️Lawson Berry “L.B.” Watson,
Wright’s cousin and a former county employee (hired around 2005 into a reclassified deputy/code enforcement role), pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit wire fraud.
From at least 2021 through early 2025, Watson collected a full taxpayer-funded paycheck (over $50,000 per year plus benefits) while performing little or no work for the sheriff’s office. He used his county-issued vehicle and phone for his personal grading business. His personnel file showed no performance reviews after 2007; multiple witnesses confirmed the no-show arrangement was widely known but unaddressed out of fear of Wright.
A county hotline tip in January 2025 led to his resignation the following month.
Sentence on July 9: 16 months in federal prison (the maximum under the agreed guidelines). He was ordered to pay $349,885.22 in restitution to Spartanburg County ($80,000 paid on the day of sentencing, followed by $2,000 per month after release). He will self-report to prison.
Watson apologized tearfully in court to the judge, Spartanburg County residents, and his family, calling the situation “super embarrassing.”
Prosecutors described the fraud as “blatant, open and obvious,” noting that taxpayer money could have funded significant public services (e.g., a new ambulance and staffing). His attorney spoke afterward, and letters of support highlighted his personal charitable work, though the judge emphasized the seriousness of the public corruption.
➡️Amos Durham, the former sheriff’s office chaplain (hired by Wright as director of the Benevolence Fund), pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit theft concerning programs receiving federal funds.
Durham helped Wright siphon more than $95,000 from the Chaplains Benevolence Fund (intended to assist deputies or their families in crisis, such as medical emergencies or disasters).
At Wright’s direction, Durham withdrew over $89,000 in cash and wrote multiple checks to Wright (totaling more than $5,000, including one used for a drug dealer). Some funds were used for personal expenses, including clothing purchases. The fund’s policy generally prohibited cash withdrawals without board approval. Needy deputies were reportedly denied aid while the money was misused.
Sentence on July 9: Five years of probation (no prison time). He was ordered to pay $95,442.39 in restitution (jointly responsible with Wright for this portion). Durham’s attorney described him as deeply remorseful, with a background of community service (longtime pastor, recipient of awards for service). Prosecutors highlighted the breach of trust and power imbalance, with Wright directing the scheme and Durham knowingly assisting.
Wright’s charges also included obtaining controlled substances by misrepresentation (related to painkillers).
The overall case involved misuse of public funds, wire fraud elements, and a breach of public trust that affected county resources meant for law enforcement personnel and services.
Wright is expected to self-report to a federal prison facility (reports mentioned Jessup, Georgia) within weeks. Watson will join him in federal custody. Durham avoids incarceration but faces probation and restitution.
These sentencings mark the end of the federal proceedings. Wright still faces dozens of state ethics charges separately.
Nothing to love about what any of them just said... They're all sellout losers

South Carolina SCDOT, masters of the photo-op, failures at actual infrastructure. They snag $23.5M in federal money, parade it around like they just solved world hunger, and expect us to clap while 18 aging bridges, five of them in Horry County, still need another $93 million that nobody has a plan to find.
Barely 20% of the real cost covered. The rest? “We’ll figure it out later”, the official motto of a state that treats its roads and bridges like disposable party favors.
Decades of neglect, deferred maintenance, and political theater, and this is the best they can do?
A glorified down payment on bridges that are already rotting out.
South Carolina doesn’t have an infrastructure problem. It has an SCDOT and state government problem.
Keep celebrating the crumbs while the whole damn system collapses.
SOUTH CAROLINA GOVERNMENT LEADERS AND BUREAUCRATS HAVE BLOOD ON THEIR HANDS. Governor Henry McMaster and SCDOT Secretary Justin Powell have presided over a state that for years RANKED SECOND in the ENTIRE country for TRAFFIC FATALITIES rates per mile driven.
Over 1,000 people were slaughtered on our roads in peak years like 2024, many on the very state-maintained roads SCDOT controls (where ~95% of fatal crashes happen).
These clowns and their agencies knew exactly where the death traps were, just 5% of roads causing ~30% of the fatalities.
Instead of fixing them aggressively, they let rural highways stay deadly with poor shoulders, missing guardrails, bad markings, crumbling pavement, and potholes that turn minor mistakes into coffins. Decades of deferred maintenance under Henry McMaster leadership, which SCDOT Justin Powell himself admitted, directly contributed to preventable deaths.
Then they have the gall to blame it all on “bad drivers” while doing the bare minimum on enforcement and infrastructure. Speeding, DUI, and no seatbelts are real problems, but when your roads are engineered like death traps and repairs drag on for years, you own part of every wreck. And who pays the price?
Every single South Carolina driver through sky-high auto insurance rates. Fatal crashes create massive claim severity (wrongful death lawsuits, huge medical bills, long-term care).
Insurers pass those costs straight to the drivers while McMaster’s administration and Powell’s SCDOT drag their feet on real safety upgrades.
The recent 2026 SCDOT overhaul law McMaster signed is too little, too late. They had years to act. Instead, they let people die and then hiked South Carolinians insurance bills to cover for their incompetence.
Governor Henry McMaster and Justin Powell, and the entire bloated SCDOT bureaucracy that couldn’t fix obvious killer roads fast enough, are directly responsible for making South Carolina one of the most dangerous places to drive in America.
Fix the damn roads, enforce the laws ruthlessly, or get the hell out of the way. Lives are more important than YOUR political timelines and excuses.
Stop killing us and stop making us pay for it.

Fox News says these places are packed with Chinese women ... taking their new "American" babies home to be raised by the Chinese Communist Party.
Actually, the question is why our intelligence agencies watched China buy Mitch McConnell in exactly the way they bought the Biden family, and did NOTHING in the McConnell case
... and actively aided in covering up the Biden case, hiding the laptop (which contained all the evidence they needed of the bribery) and lying about it being Russian disinformation.
What does it indicate? China owns or owned these agencies, too.
Let me introduce you to Senator Ashley Pro Forma!
She thinks Florida sent her to the Senate to help John Thune block Pres Trump from making recess appointments.
If you're from Florida - please explain to her that she has this all wrong.
She is supposed to be supporting Pres Trump and the America First agenda - not helping John Thune obstruct the peoples' will.
