2023 was an incredible year for not just myself but my team. When microphones were in front of me I was asked about having a โcareer year?โ. Itโs no doubt our car had speed, consistency & driver execution at an all time level.
Since the racing season has wound down Iโve had some time to reflect and ask myself what key things stick out to me about this year.
I think from a personal standpoint I have mentally matured as a person. I have an understanding what to do situationally that Iโve become confident in. Then itโs simply about executing. I set a goal for myself as a driver this year to be more consistent. I wanted to consistently qualify, I wanted to consistently make the correct decisions and ultimately I wanted to prove to myself I could do it on a night in night out basis. In our industry there is always a lot of noise. Lots of opinions out there. I can promise you no one is a harder critic of my racing then myself. Nothing written, said or posted bothers me. What bothers me is when I feel I have not fulfilled everything Iโm capable of. This year I felt I scratched that surface more then I ever have. Regardless of the past i have always known I have this in me. I am still pushing every day in my film study, my physical fitness, my eating habits to make myself the best athlete and race car driver I can be.
With that being said there are 3 people I almost canโt put in words how much they mean to me. Every time I went to the podium I tried my best to explain how great my team is. We see a lot of driver movement in our sport, we see drivers needing breaks, we see the toll of the road and our schedules wear us down. The truth is what we do as drivers/crew is a unique opportunity. Itโs something I donโt take for granted. We still have pride and competitiveness though. We still all WANT TO WIN. I try to mention it every time we hit victory lane or a podium or any interview. I HAVE THE BEST TEAM ON THIS PLANET. Rick Warner has brought a level of success, experience and mentorship that you canโt find just anywhere. Everything we want to achieve heโs already done it. I know I have a guy on the wrenches that is going to go down as the greatest to ever do it. I donโt take that for granted. Zack Middlebrooks detail, commitment and loyalty is something that goes beyond just a person who works for RAR. I not only consider him a incredible asset to our team but also a great friend. Brady Forbrook eats, sleeps and breathes sprint car racing. Heโs grown up around it his whole life. He brings great energy, intelligence and reliability to our team. Every night I can see the process work and know if we took one part out it may not flow perfectly. Iโve learned that over the years. It takes the right chemistry.
You can look at it anyway you want. I had a career year. We had a career year. That seems to be the question. What really matters is I go to the race track each day with people who are not only incredibly skilled at what they do on a race car but they are people I enjoy and love to be around.
Itโll be good for all of us to get a well deserved break. Take some time to ourselves and Iโm excited to get back at it with the best in the business.
