Here’s what Real Madrid should do.

Irreversibly announce the refusal to play in the Spanish Super Cup in Istanbul. Madrid already pay Ferland Mendy essentially to turn up for Adidas photo shoots at this point. Surely the financial implications of withdrawing couldn’t possibly hurt the club so badly.

The RFEF has booked Beşiktaş, Fenerbahçe and Galatasaray’s stadiums for the Super Cup, but Başakşehir’s stadium should be available during those same days. There are plenty of Turkish fans eager to watch Madrid. They should not be deprived. Madrid should organize two friendlies in Istanbul on the same dates, one against Başakşehir and one against another Turkish Süper Lig club. Let’s see who sells out their venues and whose matches draw more viewers worldwide.

Yes, there will be questions about what that does to Madrid’s image, but those questions can remain unanswered and the club needn’t be overly concerned.

The La Liga president compared a member club’s communications to Nazi propaganda methods and then repeated it while ‘clarifying’. That’s a gravely concerning and deeply disrespectful line from someone who’s also an RFEF vice president. Where is the condemnation from other clubs in Spain or the rest of Europe? And why should Madrid worry about its image in the eyes of institutions that won’t call that out?

There must be consequences beyond an official statement. Since RFEF allows this kind of disgraceful behavior from its VP to one of its member clubs, it should face the consequences.

For more than two months, I have been working on a truly horrific story about one of the gravest war crimes committed by the United States since Vietnam: The bombing of the Shajareh Tayyebeh school in Minab, Iran. It was one of the first targets struck in the opening hours of the war on February 28, 2026.

At least 156 people were killed in the U.S. cruise missile strikes—120 of them were children and 26 were teachers. We spoke to survivors, first responders, parents, doctors, teachers, psychologists, and other witnesses. Some of them had never before shared their experiences of that day.

It would be impossible to do justice to what happened in Minab that day with words alone. In more than 25 years in journalism and reporting on war, I do not believe I have reported on a more heinous single crime.
