@GlasgowCC Can you actually do more meaningful things to reduce car usage in the city? Replace the M8, reduce most roads to one lane. Most cities in Europe have done this and not looked back. There are still far too many people driving in Glasgow - you need to restrict the movement of cars.

This was one of the more interesting arguments Zohran Mamdani made today at the U20 Mayors Summit, and a reminder that he can be genuinely sharp when he drops the “central casting” routine.

“In New York City, there are certain words that have taken on ideological associations.”

“Quality of life has come to be seen as somehow a right-wing concern. Efficiency… has been taken on as a right-wing concern, rooting out fraud and waste, a right-wing concern.”

Mamdani’s argument is that refusing to engage those issues actually helps the Right.

“If you are staring at an example of social disorder or social inefficiency, and the left refuses to explain either why it has happened or how they will fix it, then the right gets to point at someone in the immediate area and say, ‘That’s who did it.’”

The harder question is how much of the broader Left is actually prepared to follow the advice.

@ScotRail @scotgov Thanks Paul, I think these initiative are great. However, thinking selfishly, they don't benefit me. I take the train as I believe it is a socially beneficial, sustainable option. Anecdotally I know others who would like to do the same but feel they can't afford to do so

@ScotRail True, it's likely set on the fact that those who commute between Glasgow and Edinburgh are likely to be paid more. I am not. I'm paying almost the same fare to get all the way to Edinburgh to reach somewhere 2/3 of the way there

@ScotRail Thanks for your response Paul. However, as I was already a flexipass user, scrapping peak fares has not made a difference. Can you also explain why the half hour journey from Queen Street to Linlithgow costs £5 more than the half hour journey from Queen Street to Stirling?

@ScotRail Hi Paul - I commute from Crosshill to Linlithgow daily. I could use tap n pay which would cost me £18.70. However I use a Flexipess which gives me the cheapest possible journey at £17.90 return (which is still a lot for my daily commute). You'd be better off just reducing fares
