Bobby Fischer (who many regard as the greatest chess player of all time), two weeks before he became the World Champion, 1972.

He retired 3 years later and forfeited the title at age 32. World Chess Federation offered Fischer $3.5M ($21M today) as prize money to return and defend his title, but he refused.
