Andy Burnham's intervention in the Manchester City affair was inappropriate, injudicious and badly, badly misjudged. It felt like a nod to the power of nation state ownership of English football clubs. It felt as if the Establishment was going in to bat for its buddies.
Poor - and biased - response from Andy Burnham on Manchester City being found guilty of all charges related to serious breaches of the Premier League’s financial rules by an Independent Commission.
He says “I can’t intervene *more* in the process,” which requires an explanation in itself.
Then offers commentary on previous proceedings he felt was unfair, AND states he wouldn’t want to lose the club’s owners who have “been such a huge partner in the building of modern Manchester. Obviously, the building of Manchester City into the global force that it is.”
How was that force built?
And on the investment into the city itself, per a 2022 Guardian report: “Nine sites were sold to Sheikh Mansour at a fraction of their value, and well below what other plots nearby fetched. They were on leases lasting 999 years, well beyond the norm. And the fund shifted what had been public assets to companies registered in Jersey.
“That walk along the water from New Islington into Ancoats now passes blocks of privatised land owned in an offshore tax haven, which yields millions upon millions for a key member of the wealthy elite running a surveillance state halfway across the globe. One of the greatest cities in the world has sold itself to a senior figure in a brutal autocracy – and not even for a good price.”
Cody Gakpo spent the last 10 minutes of the Forest game on his feet in the dugout as #LFC tried to find a winner. He was the first one over to the 4th official at FT. He’s not tried to agitate for a move, despite all the noise. I really do hope people get behind him this season.
I have witnessed this club go from doubters to believers, and from believers to champions. It took hard work and I always did everything I could to help the club get there. Nothing makes me prouder than that.
Us crumbling to yet another defeat this season was very painful and not what our fans deserve. I want to see Liverpool go back to being the heavy metal attacking team that opponents fear and back to being a team that wins trophies. That is the football I know how to play and that is the identity that needs to be recovered and kept for good. It cannot be negotiable and everyone that joins this club should adapt to it.
Winning some games here and there is not what Liverpool should be about. All teams win games.
Liverpool will always be a club that means a great deal to me and to my family. I want to see it succeed for long after I have moved on.
As I’ve always said, qualifying to next season’s Champions League is the bare minimum and I will do everything I can to make that happen.
Liverpool 17 points worse off than this time last season, and would need to win every game from here to match last season's total points tally. A truly sorry title defence. Mitigating circumstances I know but Arne Slot's football has been hard to watch for months now.
@Sean_Rogers Last year the manager used: Quansah, Gomez, Endo, Robertson and Gravenberch at CB. Whilst this validates your point, Slot’s persistence with Konate this season with Gomez on the bench (when Quansah gets bombed after 45 minutes last season) is disgraceful.
@RobGutmann@CraigHope_DM Rob you will need to establish “the conditions” of such a move. 😀
Thank you both for this summer.
Can we all agree never again? 😂
@MsiDouglas@TheAnfieldWrap@johngibbonsblog Oh it was out of date by the time I listened. 😂 Was still great. I hope you get a rest and a pint on Monday night when it’s all over.
