Hamas’s fascist militias attacked civilians in Khan Younis today, shooting, wounding, and kidnapping several, then retreated straight into the Nasser Hospital Medical Complex, where they’ve built torture rooms and interrogation chambers in full view of UN agencies and international NGOs. To understand that, we need to rewind to 1939, when newly elected Neville Chamberlain was dealing with the aftermath of the Arab Revolt in British Palestine...

Who better to take us through the story than *the* authority on this subject, the great Simon Sebag Montefiore @simonmontefiore ?

In 1939, Neville Chamberlain realised that, with war encroaching in Europe, the Middle East was going to be key. The empire had almost totally collapsed, and he came to the conclusion that Britain had backed the wrong side between the peoples of the Holy Land, thinking: why were the British "risking it all for this kind of tiny group of Jews"?

And so, in 1939, the Arabs were offered a whole state in the land of Israel, where the Jews would be a tiny minority, and where their migration quotas would be dramatically reduced.

But this was not enough for the Mufti; he needed it to be totally Arab. So he rejected the plan. The same happened in 1947.

This, Simon argues, is still the ethos of a large part of the Palestinian community today too, and hence why the issue is so hard to resolve.

Understanding the contemporary Middle East and its conflicts is impossible without knowing the history of the region over the last 100 years.

Simon’s book, The Cauldron, is an enthralling guide to the whole terrain. It was a pleasure to host him last week to hear about his new book.

In a new interview, Hamas leader Osama Hamdan poses a grotesque question. He asks whether Israel will survive past its eightieth anniversary in 2028 or collapse under supposed military failures. He claims Israeli thinkers, citizens, and soldiers are “screaming” that they are being bled and cannot win decisively, and he frames this as proof that Hamas is marching toward victory. He then openly glorifies the martyrdom cult of his Islamist fascist organization, declaring that Hamas does not mind if women and children are killed so that others can “live in dignity.” Anyone can run the clip through translation software and see it for themselves.

Then ask a few simple questions: Should these people ever govern Palestinians in Gaza? Ask the pro-resistance students, journalists, activists, leftists, and self-described pro-Palestine voices whether this value system can deliver freedom and prosperity for Palestinians? Who shattered the ceasefire on October 7 and carried out the single worst day of violence against the Jewish people since the Holocaust, triggering the worst catastrophe in modern Palestinian history?

Hamas must be annihilated, destroyed, erased, and never allowed to rebrand or rehabilitate itself. It is astonishing that some policymakers are discussing letting the group run in Palestinian elections this November when every senior figure in this jihadist organization should be tried for crimes against humanity and barred permanently from political or administrative life. Gaza needs full de-Hamasification to eliminate any trace of an ideology that is immune to incentives, immune to reform, and lethal to Palestinian hopes for a future worth living.
