@DrewSmithee 399 MW of the queue requested ERIS, the rest requested NRIS. The generators could elect not to need deliverability upgrades and just be curtailed if they wanted to!
@xiaowang1984 Serving new load is getting more expensive than it has been in the recent past. New renewables are cheap but have low capacity accreditation. Supply chain issues, interest rates, other factors are increasing the cost of new generation across the board.
@xiaowang1984 Generation is different - system is planned to existing and new load and all is rate based (unless the new customer is funding some specific incremental resource, like Facebook’s deal with PNM for wind in New Mexico).
@DrewSmithee@a_swick@xiaowang1984 And really before you hit that step you need the electrical engineers to work their magic to make sure the power actually flows as desired with a higher line rating. Also have to rebuild substations that are boxed in to take advantage of the higher rating. Pretty complex problem.
@DrewSmithee@a_swick@xiaowang1984 Reconductoring dialogue should shift to reconductoring/rebuilding. Certainly has a role to play but not a magic bullet. Condition, capabilities of existing towers are a major wild card and you need to look at each line in detail to figure out which is even technically feasible.
@DrewSmithee A fun example from the previously mentioned project: downsizing from a 1.345” diameter conductor to a 1.107” diameter advanced conductor with the same rating required ROW to grow from 150’ to 440’ to remain compliant with noise regs.
@DrewSmithee Yep, could be an issue on older lines with narrower ROW. We also have noise regs in Colorado which are typically more challenging than the EMF regs. Smaller wires are louder so it can be hard to take advantage of being able to downsize diameter with an advanced conductor.
@DrewSmithee CO has rules limiting magnetic fields for transmission lines - levels above 150 mG at the edge may be subject to further mitigation measures. Can still run into induced voltage issues below those levels.
@DrewSmithee We did an analysis on conductor type for a project in CO that gave us some comparative data. A 1272 KCMIL conductor (steel reinforced) at 2,890 amps had a reading of 54.7 mG at the edge of the 150’ ROW. Same diameter of conductor at 4,900 amps (advanced conductor) was 92.8 mG.
@NickRiccardi I really just want it to be Twitter-but-not-Twitter and it isn’t that. I’ve spent far more time using the mute button than doing anything else on Threads. Has promise, but without some ability to curate my feed I don’t see how it replaces this hellsite for good.
