NASA drilled an 8-inch hole through 600 feet of Antarctic ice in 2009, lowered a camera into water everyone assumed was dead, and a 3-inch shrimp swam up and parked itself on the cable.

The site sat 12 miles from open water. No sunlight had reached that ocean in thousands of years. Textbooks said nothing bigger than a microbe could live there, because animals need food and food needs light.

Here's the detail that stunned the biologists. An 8-inch hole samples a laughably tiny slice of ocean. If your first random peephole into a supposedly barren sea immediately shows an animal, the sea can't be barren. You don't spot a wolf in your first minute in a forest unless the forest is full of them. Then the crew pulled the cable up and found a tentacle from a foot-long jellyfish wrapped around it.

An amphipod can't make its own food the way deep-sea microbes do. Something has to feed it. Which means ocean currents are running a supply line under 600 feet of ice, hauling nutrients 12 miles into the dark, enough to support an entire food chain nobody knew existed.

Lead scientist Bob Bindschadler said they were "operating on the presumption that nothing's there."

Europa, Jupiter's moon, holds an ocean sealed under miles of ice. For decades the argument against life there was that a sealed, dark ocean has no way to feed anything. This one grainy video quietly deleted that argument, and it's been showing up in astrobiology talks ever since.
