My 36-year run at the Sun-Sentinel is over. Laid off for the first time since I lost my job as an ice-rink skate guard at 17. Cost-cutting move then, they said, too. I'm a month from 65, so please keep any sympathy for my newspaper friends who didn’t make it to the finish line like I have. I’m looking forward to doing some things I want to do so before the hall narrows and the light dims so you might not be completely done with me yet. Thanks to everyone who made it such a fun run.
Two earthquakes today, the rare 6+ magnitude in the SE Gulf, and about a 4.0 NE of Puerto Rico. Remember there is no actual fault line in the Gulf.
The Caribbean tectonic plate is moving at a rate of 0.8" per year east relative to the North American Plate that Florida sits on.

A worsening fuel crisis across Cuba is testing the island's famed "almendrones," the vintage American cars that serve as vital shared taxis and embody the island’s ingenuity and endurance.
These days, many of the iconic gas-guzzling antique cars sit idle, casualties of fuel shortages that have gripped Cuba since January and that Cuban officials blame on a U.S. energy blockade.
Innovation starts at @NorthwellHealth. A critically ill patient at Northwell’s North Shore University Hospital (NSUH) has been one of the first in the United States — and the first on the East Coast — to be successfully treated with an innovative therapy that helps wean those who need mechanical ventilation to breathe on their own faster.
@lungpacer's FDA-approved AeroPace device uses neurostimulation, which harnesses the power of the brain and nervous system, to activate and strengthen the diaphragm muscle to control natural breathing. The result is a 43 percent faster recovery for patients placed on a ventilator for more than 96 hours, the Pennsylvania-based company said.
NSUH, a Level I trauma center and teaching hospital that treats more than 90,000 patients each year, often receives the region’s most complex cases because of its advanced life support capabilities. Eric Gottesman, MD, a critical care expert who serves as director of intensivist medicine at NSUH, spearheads the hospital’s AeroPace program. He remembers the challenge hospitals around the world faced when the first wave of the COVID-19 pandemic forced millions of patients struggling to breathe onto ventilators. Some never made it off.
“When you inhale, more than 90 percent of the work comes from the diaphragm,” said Dr. Gottesman. “The longer you are on a ventilator – the longer your recovery. Being on a ventilator for an extended period can lead to other medical complications. This innovative device can make an outsized impact on patient outcomes.”

Today is the 82nd anniversary of D-Day – the Allied landings in Normandy, which significantly hastened the countdown to the Nazis' collapse in World War II. It is one of the most important moments of unity among the defenders of life in human history, and it was less than a year until the peoples’ aspiration for freedom and the hope of peace prevailed in May 1945. It happened then. We are working to make it happen again today.
And although yesterday in Petersburg another cynical order to continue killing was issued for the army trying to destroy our freedom, history has seen this before. The Nazis also had their own hopes after D-Day. But freedom still wins. And even in the darkest circumstances, people find ways to come together to protect life.
I thank all those who are now helping to protect the values that prevailed in World War II. I thank everyone who is defending life. Glory to Ukraine!
82 years ago today, nearly 160,000 Allied troops stormed the beaches of Normandy on D-Day, launching the liberation of Europe.
We are free because they were brave. 🇺🇸
Everyone is talking about how it’s $10,000 to get into MSG for the NBA Finals. Not enough people are talking about how the Knicks publicly traded stock has outperformed pretty much everything outside of AI over the last year.
Cryptopunks were perfect for a degenerate nation. It’s wild to look at the swings in value over the past five years.

Check out the Park's newest visitor — a beaver! 🦫 Recently seen swimming around Gansevoort Peninsula, this beaver marks the first recorded sighting in our 400-acre Estuarine Sanctuary! Though a rare sight in NYC, beavers are native to our local waterways.
