I am a cop. I clocked a car doing 85 in a 55. I pulled him over. The driver was a young kid, maybe 20. He was shaking. He had a tie on, but it was crooked. "I'm sorry, officer," he said. "I'm late for an interview. My alarm broke. If I miss this, I lose my apartment." I looked at his hands. Dirty fingernails. He was a mechanic trying to get a desk job. Trying to do better. I closed my ticket book. "Get out," I said. He panicked. "Get out and let me fix your tie," I said. I fixed his knot. I brushed off his shoulder. "Slow down," I said. "Better to arrive late and alive than not at all. Now go get that job." He drove off doing 55. Sometimes you serve and protect by giving a break.
