Unpopular opinion of the day: "Create an online reading community" is not code for "add even more control over young people's reading lives at home." Children & adolescents need (and want) to read self-selected texts and engage in family literacy activities w/out school mandates.
This will be important whether in person, online, or a blended setting:
Every kid in every school needs a word of encouragement every day.
And every teacher will need the same.
Teachers! Repeat after me:
I will not have my students make "Indian" feathers/clothes.
I will not culturally appropriate an entire people for "cute" activities.
I will tell my students the truth about this country's relationship with Indigenous people.

One take-a-way from #StanLee is the fact that he didn’t ask for permission or acceptance for his approach to story telling. Our students should be able to present their knowledge just as boldly and on their own terms #HipHopEd
@mrkempnz Have you written a blog about how teachers find experts to talk with Ss, like you did when you skyped with the entrepreneur game developer through Hasbro UK ? I am looking forward to trying out your board game #pbl with my 5th graders.
@ndiamond87 Would you be interested in having older #gridpals ? We are a 5th grade class in St.Lous, MO. I've never done #gridpals but we love #flipgrid !
We have gotten student engagement all wrong. True student engagement is not about dancing on tables, entertaining, cotton candy and lollipops. True student engagement is the result of heart-to-heart conversations, lead by adults who refuse to quit on kids!
@BIEpbl@smokeylit@burgessdave Thank you @BIEpbl for the tip. Tomorrow brings my first entry event. Love feeling this excitement again for trying something new. Thank you!
