@aj538_ Hi Arsley! #virtualevents is a great example of how we use technology to make connections in our generation. Right now bc of the pandemic I have been doing all virtual events for my sorority and its the perfect way for all of us to be together even when we cant be in person.
@nicolettegoldh2 Hi Nicolette! #virtualnetworking is a great example! I mentioned @Zoom which is a very similar idea of using technology to make connections. These will definitely help us with networking and our jobs in the future!
This is mentioned in Lost and Saved Again as, "new information and communication technologies allow people to overcome historical spatial limits on interaction in networked societies" (Hampton and Wellmon, 2018, p. 647).
@Zoom has allowed the new generation to connect with each other virtually, get a degree, and work professionally without being in person. Connecting and finding a community you belong in is now limitless- #DCIM352
@dykaix Hi! I thought the point you made about advertisements was very interesting. The reason companies can have free services is that they spend more time creating ads than making their services of quality for users. They care more about money than helping or satisfying their users.
@nconforth1 Hi! Watching the documentary made me also realize how detrimental it is to my health and how it could be affected the quality of my life. I never realized how much we really are tracked and as you mentioned, monitored and manipulated.
@nicolettegoldh2 Hi Nicolette, I also found the documentary to be insightful. I found it very interesting how the algorithms that social media companies use create addiction. As you mentioned, mental health is linked to social media and can have negative effects on our lives and the way we think.
Following social media companies using algorisms to encourage addiction, Richard Seymour says, "algorithms... such as YouTube’s “up next” recommendation system, work best by polarizing people...“extreme” content, sufficient to keep users hooked" (Seymour, 2021).
After viewing the #TheSocialDilemma on Netflix, I agree that it is clear that social media companies use algorithms to present information to us that relates to our interests in order to encourage "addiction" and attraction to their company and application #DCIM352
@mtinana_ru Hi Michaela! Club Penguin is a fun example of immaterial labor and playbor. Through my own experience playing, I defin9ielty see the use of communicating and emotion during game play. Coding such as access codes is also a large part of Club Penguin.
@ireneli180 Hi Irene! Great example of immaterial labor. NBA games clearly demonstrate the use of communication and information passed by each player during gameplay. Being able to personalize players clearly shows it is an immaterial product.
@nicolettegoldh2 Hi Nicolette! Your example of immaterial labor demonstrates the use of coding and technology well when gaming. Communication and emotion are clearly shown when playing the game and the creation of the game.
As mentioned in the reading, immaterial labor is, "work involving information and communication" (Dyer-Witheford and De Peuter, p. 21). Halo uses coding & different technology when weapons & war tactics are engaged by players. Emotions are exhibited by the characters & players.
An example of “immaterial labor” & gaming would be the Halo series such as Halo Infinite. Halo is a virtual combat game that includes human soldiers battling against aliens that invade their planet in a civil war. Different weapons & fighting tactics are used for killing #DCIM352
@Bianca64466558 Hi Bianca, this is a great example of a counterpublic because LLEGO is an organization that, “are constituted through a conflictual relation to the dominant public” (Warner, 2002, p. 2). They created a community to give voice to a particular group.
@sydnieedelman Hi Sydnie, I also chose CWC bc not everyone believes in the celebration or justification of women of color & what they advocate for. CWC is a community that people join if they want to voice their opinion & talk about something that might not normally be mentioned or fought for.
@nicolettegoldh2 Hi Nicolette, great ex. of a counterpublic. The NAACP is a community fighting for social justice and having their voices be heard. They, "explicitly and strategically seek to challenge the “dominant knowledge” inherent to the mainstream public sphere" (Jackson and Wells, p. 3)
(Part 2) As Warner said, the CWC would be considered a counterpublic bc they "are constituted through a conflictual relation to the dominant public" (Warner, 2002, p. 2). They defend their right as women of color by making powerful post and statements on insta #DCIM352#CWC
(Part 1) The Rutgers Coalition for Women of Color is an example of a counterpublic bc they are a group celebrating women of color and fighting for justice. They are a group working to resolve to overcome exclusions that women of color face. #DCIM352
@_sam_2141 Hi Sam, this is a perfect example of a brand public bc the fans of Patron Margarita have the open space to be creative with the brand and show their passion to each other, but there is no need for direct communication from the company itself
