One of the coaching ideas I've borrowed came from Bill Belichick.

Conventional wisdom says your best defender should guard their best player.

Belichick didn't always see it that way.

If the game plan already called for doubling, bracketing, or constantly helping on the opponent's best receiver, why also "waste" your best cornerback there?

The defense was already committing two players to that matchup.

Instead, he'd often put his best corner on the second-best receiver, the player who could be eliminated one-on-one.

I've found myself thinking about basketball the same way.

There are offensive stars you're going to load to no matter who is guarding them. You're shrinking the floor, bringing help, rotating early, and living with someone else beating you.

If that's already your plan, is your best defender actually creating the most value there?

Sometimes the answer is yes.

Sometimes your best defender creates a bigger advantage by completely erasing another offensive weapon while your team collectively handles the star.

It's a reminder that defensive matchups shouldn't always be about going down the roster.

They should be about creating the greatest advantage for the defense as a whole.

@Leuel48Fan I’m sorry you are mad. It was the torrential rain over the week leading up to race, having to close 75% of on property parking is gonna be a problem anywhere. But the track is close to 2 interstates and Route 66/IL53, which is my contention. Bowman top 5…be happy

@Leuel48Fan Your OP said in middle of nowhere with no interstate or highway nearby, even with your maps it says 14 miles and 8 miles to I80/55, not to mention 53 (with construction having nearest I80 on ramp closed). Not sure how I’m the one lying.

@stationsquare 5 inches of rain in 24 hours is going to do that to most any facility. Yes, it sucks, but it’s not a facility issue. The grass lots were UNUSABLE, so they had to pivot, and they did the best they could. No rain and they have 5 more lots on track property to utilize.
