If you default on a loan and you gave your land as security, the bank/lender must issue these notices before selling your land:

1. 90-day Statutory Notice of Default – If you remedy the default, they cannot sell.

2. 40-day Notice to Sell – They notify you they intend to sell if you don’t rectify.

3. 45-day Redemption Notice – You still have a chance to comply and save your land.

4. Advertisement – If you don’t redeem, your land must be advertised in a newspaper of nationwide circulation and after 14 days the auctioneer may sell.

Banks can’t just wake up and sell your land because you missed a loan payment.

The Kenya animal feeds industry requires extra policy and legal regulations to protect farmers.
In the past few days, a graduate student and I have been travelling around the country talking to retailers and farmers and I do believe most farmers are feeding contaminated feeds and feed ingredients including the salts and mineral premixes.
An industry that is filled with thugs who even threaten you with violence if you take any samples from their supply region needs extreme measures to curb this janjajanja culture.
I also believe that most salts and premixes are not helping farmers and their livestock as their supplementation is not context dependent.

Today, I was in Garissa for the Nikah ceremony of my colleague and friend, Dr. Farhan Abdi Mahat, as he married Yasmin Dekow, daughter of Garissa Township MP, Hon. Major (Rtd) Delow Barrow.

The wedding brought together an impressive gathering of national and county leaders, business leaders, professionals, elders, family and friends from across the region. I was especially humbled when the Chief Guest, Cabinet Secretary for Health, Hon. Aden Duale @HonAdenDuale, warmly introduced me to the congregation and generously acknowledged the sophistication and advanced capabilities of Dr. Kalebi Labs (DKL).

Throughout the ceremony, I found myself reflecting on how deeply Garissa has shaped my own journey.

It was here, in October 2005, fresh from specialist pathology training at University of Nairobi, that I requested to be posted to the then Garissa Provincial General Hospital, becoming its first consultant pathologist - and the first pathologist to serve the entire North Eastern Province since Kenya’s independence. I came at the invitation of the then Medical Superintendent, Dr. Khadija, wife of Hon. Farah Maalim, not fully appreciating then how remote and underserved the region was. That decision became one of the greatest blessings of my career.

The laboratory I found then had enormous challenges: essential investigations were unavailable, equipment was broken, reagents were scarce, staff morale was low, and clinicians had understandably lost confidence in the service. With the support of a committed Hospital Management Team, we rebuilt the laboratory into a centre of excellence, helping Garissa PGH attain internship training status later that year.

Without realising it then, Garissa changed me. It was my epiphany. It shifted my vision of pathology from an academic discipline to a lifelong mission of bringing world-class diagnostics to underserved communities through innovation, entrepreneurship and practical service. That experience planted the seed that eventually led me to build modern laboratory networks and, years later, found DKL @DKLDrKalebiLabs. The vision has never changed: making advanced, high-quality diagnostics accessible to all.

Returning to Garissa over two decades later, and hearing DKL recognised in the very place where that dream first took root, was profoundly moving. It reminded me that Allah’s plans often unfold in ways we cannot foresee. Sometimes the places that shape us most are the ones we least expect.

To Dr. Farhan, Yasmin and their respective families, thank you for allowing us to share in your beautiful day.

Those were the words my medical school teacher, Prof. Patrick Muia Ndavi, kept repeating to my team earlier this week as he toured Dr. Kalebi Labs (DKL). At almost every workstation, he would retell the story in his trademark comical style, leaving my Gen Z staff in stitches while making hilarious observations about the “out of this world” technology he was seeing. 😂

Coming from a man who has shaped generations of Kenyan doctors and healthcare leaders, I received the “maddest of them all” remark with gratitude, humility, and a quiet sense of pride. Later, as if clarifying himself, he asked how I had even dreamt of such a crazy venture, let alone built it - before explaining that I must indeed have been mad!🤣

Prof. Ndavi had made an impromptu visit while accompanying a relative who needed tests. Having asked around for me, he was directed here by members of his own medical family. To my surprise, he neither had my current contact details nor knew that I had started DKL. Like many others, he had assumed I had simply returned to my previous establishment after my sabbatical.

After a brief discussion about his relative getting the tests needed, we set off on a tour of the laboratory. The legendary Professor of Obstetrics and Gynaecology immediately began interrogating my team on every detail with genuine curiosity.

He was visibly astonished by what he found in our proudly Kenyan, homegrown laboratory. He was particularly fascinated by our Computer-Assisted Semen Analysis (CASA) system, Total Laboratory Automation (TLA), automated malaria diagnostics, fully automated urinalysis, rapid antiphospholipid antibody testing, and DNA paternity testing with results in under two hours.

Several times he stopped and asked, almost in disbelief, “Why was I never told about DKL?” and “Do doctors out there actually know this exists?”

Listening to him reflect on how medicine has evolved since his days as a medical student at Makerere University, through decades of practice and teaching at University of Nairobi / KNH and practicing at the Nairobi Hospital, was deeply inspiring. He spoke with genuine amazement about how technology, automation, molecular diagnostics, digital pathology, and AI are transforming healthcare today.

This was an exceptionally meaningful moment to have one of my former medical school teachers visit something we’ve built from scratch and seeing the genuine pride and wonder in his eyes … proud to be counted among them ‘mad people’ and to be of service to Prof at our @DKLDrKalebiLabs innovative, distributive and disruptive homegrown ultramodern ISO15189-accredited CAP-proficient lab in Upper Hill Kibra Sub-County.

The Madden Julian Oscillation (MJO) has been lingering in the Western Pacific Ocean & Western Hemisphere for a couple of weeks, triggering Westerly Wind Bursts that have created massive Kelvin waves, helping in the establishment of El Nino.
Per the Euro & BOM models, from this weekend, a low amplitude MJO pulse enters phases 1, 2 & 3 bringing higher relative humidity, moist westerly winds & improved atmospheric convection over the Kenyan Rift Valley, Central & Western.
Showers are already falling in some places in these regions and heavier rainfall is expected in the last 10 days of June (from Monday next week), ending weeks of a dry spell that has caused widespread crop failure.

🚨 Lost at the Court of Appeal and thinking the Supreme Court is your next automatic stop? It isn’t, and the Constitution is deliberate about that.

The Supreme Court provides insight on this issue in the case of Eliud Nyaega Gwaro v Kenya Revenue Authority - Petition No. E036 of 2025.

Many people assume that if they’re unhappy with a Court of Appeal decision, the Supreme Court is simply the next stop. It isn’t. The Constitution is deliberately narrow about which cases get that far.

Under Article 163(4) of the Constitution of Kenya, an appeal moves from the Court of Appeal to the Supreme Court in only two situations:
(a) as of right — but only where the case genuinely involves the interpretation or application of the Constitution; or
(b) by certification — where the Supreme Court or the Court of Appeal certifies that the case raises a matter of general public importance.

However, a certification by the Court of Appeal may be reviewed by the Supreme Court, and either affirmed, varied or overturned.

So the question becomes: can you turn any ordinary dispute into a constitutional one simply by mentioning your rights, and claim entry under the first route?
No, and the Supreme Court has firmly closed that gap.

A man dismissed from his job tried to reach the Supreme Court as of right, pointing to constitutional rights like fair labour practices, fair administrative action and a fair hearing. But the Court looked past the labels. At its heart, this was an ordinary employment dispute about whether the lower courts had applied the correct procedure, not a question of constitutional interpretation.

Two takeaways worth remembering:
• Simply naming constitutional rights does not make a case constitutional. The constitutional question must be the real substance of the dispute, not decoration over a factual or procedural one.
• To appeal as of right, the constitutional issue must actually have been raised, argued and decided in the courts below, you cannot introduce it for the first time at the Supreme Court.

Since the case satisfied neither path under Article 163(4), the Supreme Court had no power to hear it, and the petition was struck out.
The principle is simple but important: the Supreme Court is not an automatic third bite at every dispute.
