The biggest problem with AI speech models (TTS)
One of the biggest problems with advanced voice modes is that speaking with TTS/STS models does not feel natural. They interrupt you, you have little time to think while speaking, and you cannot speak too slowly or the AI will start responding.
I think a lot of this is because AVM models cannot see. When people talk to each other, they don't just pay attention to the words, they also pay attention to the speaker's facial expressions. Are they speaking with a thoughtful expression that requires more time to think while speaking? Are they speaking with an angry expression and talking quickly, wanting to get everything out quickly? Depending on the speaker, you respond differently, faster, slower, with more pauses, or shorter.
Speech models need a vision component. I am convinced of that. It sounds paradoxical, but in order to have good speech models, they must above all be able to see.
Language is not one-dimensional. Speaking always involves the unconscious reading of facial expressions and gestures.
