People are catching feelings that Luos have turned up in massive numbers to give Ruto a tumultuous welcome. You have to truly understand Luo politics and the Luo psyche, before you can retort that "si hawa watu ndio walikuwa wanachukia Ruto?" The Luwo tribe have no capacity for grudges. Neither do they get recruited to hate on behalf of others.

But the more important thing to note is that the community is thoroughly communal in nature. The Luo live like one huge family, quite unlike the individualistic nature of many communities. It means therefore that politically, culturally and socially, the highly educated Luo professor and the slum-dwelling Luo school dropout, operate in tandem, as if a force unites them. This is why the streets of Kisumu can withdraw from riots without Raila asking them to, because the communication between each other is nearly spiritual, with a heavy dose of telepathy. The community thinks as one.

There is something that I often wonder if Kenyans ever give a political face. The alleged ease of the Luo man to not only walk out of romantic relationships at will, but also to maintain multiple ones while seeking to make his bloated harem happy. It is borne out of the ease of upbringing. Luos don't go to mountains or forests to take oaths, unlike many tribes. So there is never anything binding them to any cause. It makes it easy to walk in and out of liaisons without feeling like there is supposed to be an explanation.

Additionally, after decades of marginalisation under all of Kenyan regimes, the community has grown to have no huge political expectations, to make friends easily and to accept enmity with grace. Those who hate the Luo hate them for doing good and hate them for doing bad. Imagine in that scenario, if any Luo will really care what the opinions of other tribes will be. The Nilotic migration of the community itself tells centuries of stories of "walking away". So when the time comes, they simply walk away. The Luo make new friends while ready to walk away. The Luo walk away because it lessens their burdens. When they welcome Ruto, you cannot therefore remind them of bad things he has done to them because they didn't ask you to be the registrar of bad things done to them. In other words, you are swallowing brufen for their headache. You can't tell them that it will end in premium tears because they will not borrow your tears.

Finally, as they say in relationships, men seek respect and not necessarily love. That is the same with Luo politics. You can show them a week's respect and they will immediately reciprocate. They don't really care about love. So for instance, the manner in which Ruto feted Raila during his AUC launch was always going to warm the hearts of the community. They were always going to respond with love during Ruto rallies. So Luos will not hate him on your behalf. Those who hope Luos will regret can also hope some more. And if they cry, it will be their tears.
