At least where I sit in DC, ASPI's products are frequently useful in shedding light on new aspects of managing relations with China, or better understanding existing ones. The same is not true of ACRI, the shop that James runs.
The US, and many other countries, have their own "one China" policies. They do not accept China's "one China" principle. UN Res. 2758 didn't mention Taiwan nor bar its participation in the United Nations. Why does Beijing insist on distorting its meaning? https://t.co/OpQ5TYOhqM
In 1969, oil was found near the Senkaku Islands, which was uncontested Japanese territory. By 1971, those islands had been part of China since ancient times.
Zhou Enlai: "I didn't care about the Senkaku Islands, but on the oil question, historians made it an issue."
Funny how some see headlines like this and think "no wonder the US is interested in Xinjiang" but never "no wonder China is interested in Xinjiang".
All great powers seek energy security. China is the world's #1 oil importer. The US is a major exporter.

Here's Stalin telling Mao to not delay in taking Xinjiang:
[We] advise to pay serious attention to Xinjiang, where there is oil in the subsoil and where you will be able to obtain cotton. It will be difficult for you without your own oil.

Of course, many believe the historic claim today but the historic record actually proves the historic claim is unimportant. Otherwise, how could Mao and the CCP not have cared about it in the 30s? They knew the history.
The actual text says ROC not China, but what's more interesting is that before Cairo, Mao and the CCP supported an independent Taiwan. The US, UK and Chiang Kai-shek decided Taiwan was part of China in 1943 and the CCP followed because it was politically convenient.
The long history of Taiwan is interesting but irrelevant to why Mao and the CCP decided Taiwan was part of China. It was only about politics of the 40s, not historic claims.
@michaelturton@julianku@BBC "The first recorded contact between China and Taiwan occurred in 239 ce, when the Chinese emperor sent a 10,000-man mission to Taiwan to explore the island." https://t.co/pG4aI8f50E
