Rising levels of atmospheric carbon dioxide appear to be subtly altering human blood chemistry, according to a recent analysis of long-term health data. Researchers examined more than two decades of blood test results from approximately 7,000 Americans, collected every two years through the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES). They observed that several key blood markers shifted in patterns that closely mirrored the ongoing increase in atmospheric CO₂ concentrations during the same period.
The most prominent shift involved a roughly 7 percent rise in serum bicarbonate levels, a critical component that helps regulate the blood's pH within a narrow, healthy range. Concurrently, average concentrations of calcium and phosphorus showed modest declines.
Bicarbonate forms part of the body's primary acid-base buffering system. Cellular metabolism produces carbon dioxide, which dissolves in the blood and converts largely into bicarbonate. The lungs expel excess CO₂ during exhalation, while the kidneys fine-tune bicarbonate levels to prevent the blood from becoming overly acidic or alkaline.
The study authors propose that elevated atmospheric CO₂ may prompt gradual adjustments in this buffering mechanism as the body works to sustain normal acid-base homeostasis. Projections based on current trends suggest that average bicarbonate levels could near the upper boundary of the accepted healthy range within roughly 50 years.
Importantly, the researchers emphasize that these findings demonstrate correlation rather than definitive causation. Numerous other influences, such as dietary habits, medications, kidney health, chronic conditions, and overall lifestyle, can affect blood chemistry. Additional investigations are essential to clarify whether atmospheric CO₂ directly drives these observed changes.
Atmospheric CO₂ concentrations have climbed from around 280 parts per million before the Industrial Revolution to more than 420 parts per million today. While public discourse centers primarily on its contribution to planetary warming, this research prompts consideration of potential direct biological impacts from sustained alterations in the air we breathe.
This preliminary evidence warrants further scientific scrutiny to better understand the implications for human health in a high-CO₂ world.
