February is the time of year when you'll start to see adult, mostly male hedgehogs who have been too sick to hibernate and have been struggling through winter, but are now succumbing to illness and starvation.
⚠️They will arrive at your feeding station or under your bird feeder looking frail and scruffy. A healthy hedgehog is well rounded and smooth.
⚠️You should never be able to see where their head ends and their body begins, or the shape of their shoulders when they walk or crouch in front of the food.
⚠️No amount of food will heal them, they need medical treatment from a rescue (never a vet).
If you see one of these poor boys, please get them to an experienced rescue urgently.

Here's the distinct difference between the approach of the classic talent incubators of the 20th century and today’s heavy hitters. https://t.co/7RuLdnfZpb
There are still lots of late born hoglets being seen out in the day.
Please remember these little babies are sick.
It's the parasites living inside them that have driven them out in the day.
No amount of warmth, love, or food will fix them.
If you keep them they will die.
They need medicines and experienced nursing from a knowledgeable rescue (never a vet).
And every minute of delay reduces their chance of survival, even when finally in the very best rescue.
So please be their ambulance, not their jailor. Give these trusting little babies a chance to live and take them straight to a rescue.

If your local rescue is full, please try others, there is ALWAYS a space. It may not be as close as you'd like, but it's just one journey and will save a life.

Now the temperature is dropping it's more likely you will see sick hedgehogs who were struggling to survive and just about making it through, begining to lose the battle and come out in the day time.
They come out because they are dying, and hypothermia is a stage of the process. It makes them feel cold, so they come out in the day to get the sun's heat.
It's an emergency.
If that process isn't reversed quickly it will be too late.
Any delay will make it impossible for them to be resuscitated, even by the best rescue in the world.
So please bring them indoors, fill a bottle with hot tap water, put it in a box, with the hedgehog, and cover them with a fleece or lots of scrunched up kitchen roll or newspaper. Put in a dish of water then leave the box in a quiet, well-lit room, and start ringing the rescues immediately.
Never take wildlife to a vet, they are for domestic animals only.
We can't always stop work to answer the phone, so if there's no answer, wait a couple of minutes and ring again. Keep doing that at each rescue until someone has a hand free to pick up the phone.
Don't leave a message, they are for non-emergencies (my messages are often backed up for 3 or 4 days).
Keep working through the rescues (a directory of UK rescues can be found at https://t.co/mqMlhmS3GR) until you find a rescue who has a space, and don't worry about distance - some rescues have volunteer drivers who will meet you halfway.
There is always a rescue with a space.
A daytime hedgehog is always an emergency, no matter how 'well' they may look, or how well they are eating.
Please #BeTheirAmbulance, not their jailor.
So very true
Have you ever thought about this?
In 100 years like in 2123 we will all be buried with our relatives and friends.
Strangers will live in our homes we fought so hard to build, and they will own everything we have today. All our possessions will be unknown and unborn, including the car we spent a fortune on, and will probably be scrap, preferably in the hands of an unknown collector.
Our descendants will hardly or hardly know who we were, nor will they remember us. How many of us know our grandfather's father?
After we die, we will be remembered for a few more years, then we are just a portrait on someone's bookshelf, and a few years later our history, photos and deeds disappear in history's oblivion. We won't even be memories.
If we paused one day to analyse these questions, perhaps we would understand how ignorant and weak the dream to achieve it all was.
If we could only think about this, surely our approaches, our thoughts would change, we would be different people.
Always having more, no time for what's really valuable in this life. I'd change all this to live and enjoy the walks I've never taken, these hugs I didn't give, these kisses for our children and our loved ones, these jokes we didn't have time for. Those would certainly be the most beautiful moments to remember, after all they would fill our lives with joy.
And some of us waste it day after day with greed, selfishness and intolerance.
Every minute of life is priceless and will never be repeated, so take time to enjoy, be grateful for, and celebrate your existence.
Please share this info! The A592 is going to be TOTALLY closed from the top of Kirkstone Pass down to Brothers Water from Monday 6th March for 4 weeks. The only positive is that the planned major roadworks will improve the road for those of us who regularly commute along it! Jon
If you see someone who is stressed or becoming more cynical, please take the time to talk with them about positive things. Burning out can be thwarted with kindness.
Compared with people at low-trust companies, people at high-trust companies report 74% less stress, 106% more energy at work, 50% higher productivity, 13% fewer sick days, 76% more engagement, 29% more satisfaction with their lives, and 40% less burnout. https://t.co/Fdf9tZdn4u
