This happens every night at the Harrison home, Michigan. Mr. Harrison, 76, has Alzheimer's. Part of his confusion is "sundowning"-tries leaving house at night thinking he needs work. Hasn't worked in 15 years, but disease makes him forget. For past eight months, Mr. Harrison's German Shepherd, Rex, 6, has been stopping him.
Every night. Mr. Harrison gets up. Walks toward front door. Rex gets there first. Blocks it. Won't let him pass. Eventually takes Mr. Harrison's sleeve gently. Leads him back to bed. Mrs. Harrison said:
"Before Rex, my husband would get outside before I could stop him. I'd wake up and he'd be gone. Wandering neighborhood at 2 AM in pajamas. Police brought him home three times. Now Rex stops him before he reaches the door." Their neurologist watched footage: "That dog is performing specialized Alzheimer's service dog work without training. He's keeping your husband safe." Sometimes dogs don't need training manuals. They just know what their person needs.
