We spent months tracking 5,467 bets from Nigeria's biggest sports betting influencers.
The bets were worth ~$4.8 million.
We wanted to answer a simple question:
If you followed their bets exactly, would you make money?
The answer is no.🧵👇

He started a business at 38 and failed.
Between 38 and 48, he attempted business five times and failed four of them.
What stands out? He always had access to the funds to try again.
This is why survivorship bias makes such a terrible example. For some people, failing once is final.
This is why the best financial advice anyone can ever receive is to structure your financial life so that a bad investment here or a missed goal there will not wipe you out.
This allows you to keep playing until the odds finally fall in your favour.
Late yesterday, the S&P Global Ratings announced what some folks had anticipated. Nigeria’s credit rating was upgraded by one notch to B (five levels below investment grade), the first upgrade since 2012. According to S&P, the considerations for the credit rating upgrade were:
✑ Higher oil prices
✑ Improved capacity to refine and export crude
✑ The decision to liberalise the exchange rate
This is a big win.
I have seen, in some places, the frustration over the gap between macro wins and micro pains. The honest answer is that the average Nigerian on the roadside cannot connect this progress to their well-being today. They will only feel it through a longer transmission chain that has not yet finished playing out.
A credit upgrade essentially signals to the global market that Nigeria is a less risky borrower, allowing the federal government and major Nigerian corporates to borrow at cheaper rates abroad. The bread-seller in Mushin does not borrow from JP Morgan or from the international debt market, so the immediate effect on her bottom line is zero.
Where it eventually shows up for her is in three indirect channels:
✑ First, cheaper sovereign borrowing means the FG can enter the international debt market and borrow at a lower rate to refinance some of its costly debt. This will result in lower debt service spend and, in theory, provide more fiscal room for roads, power, security, etc.
✑ Second, lower country-risk attracts FDI and portfolio inflows, which strengthens the Naira (we might see an extended stability in the FX market. Naira is still likely to remain a darling). The imported inflation will also slow, and this is the channel where the Mushin trader would feel it the fastest.
✑ Coys can refinance their debt or raise capital for expansion. A business expansion opens the door to hiring, which means higher income in the economy.
However, all of these still depend entirely on whether the reforms continue and whether the fiscal headroom is actually deployed productively rather than consumed (I've been hearing news of how APC Governors have been cornering funds for the Presidential campaign. Toor).
By the way, my family members and I in the equities market will smile at this development.
This experience was disappointing and honestly worrying. Emergency response is not something any city should take lightly. In critical moments, every second matters. A functional and reliable emergency system saves lives, reduces traffic chaos, and gives people confidence that help will come when needed.
Lagos is growing fast, and our emergency response system must grow with it. We need faster response times, better coordination, more equipment, and more accountability.
We can do better. And we should.

This cost them about $1 trillion.
The truth is, you cannot build systems like this exclusively on the logic of profit. You cannot expect to break even in 20 or 30 years. Projects of this scale are built because the government decides they must exist to serve the people.
And this is a problem with systems that are strictly, or overwhelmingly, capitalist. If you leave every problem in your society to the spontaneity of the market, some challenges are so large and so unprofitable that you will never have sufficient incentive to solve them.

One of the wildest things happened with this club in 2024 when they gained promotion from National League into the EFL for the first time in their 130+ years of existence.
They employed a Nigerian guy as a Football Analyst (Tactician), his name is Nathan Owolabi. You’re not gonna believe how he was employed 😅
Nathan Owolabi played a huge role in 2024 when he joined mid season to help them see things from different perspectives, via data analytics especially.
In late 2023, Bromley did something very unpopular, they announced an opening for a Tactician (screenshot attached, the tweet is still up also), and they were gonna partner with Football Manager (FM) and Xbox. People did not take them serious. Nobody employs a back room staff that way, especially one without any real-life football experience.
Nathan was shortlisted as top 3, he was really good with football manager. He was interviewed by the coach and assistant and he got the role.
He resumed in January 2024 with 15 games left in the league. He was really welcomed, in fact, the manager introduced him to his staff that “this is the man that will get us promoted” (I’ll share the YouTube link in the comments so you guys can watch it, it’s really enlightening). Don’t forget they were in the National League then.
Nathan did lots of analytics work, he analysed oppositions, how they played, using FM.
Bromley were 2nd when he joined, they beat league leaders, Chesterfield in his first game, but struggled a bit in subsequent games.
During these struggles, the head coach, Adam Woodman, needed to hear other perspectives. Nathan advised they play 3-4-3 instead of the usual 3-5-2, he’d analysed their set up, extra man, etc.
They had an important game against Solihull, and the head coach gave Nathan the opportunity to present to the first team, he showed them the opposition’s set ups, how they build from the back, their danger man, etc. the players were impressed, but he was nervous as that was his first time.
Nathan kept doing his thing and it helped them get play offs after finishing 3rd in the league. They beat Altrincam in the semis and Solihull in the final at Wembley.
That was the first time Bromley got promoted to the football league in their history. Two seasons later, they’ve moved up to League One. I’ll be rooting for them in future.
Eleven years ago Sen. Rubio warned USA & wanted to make sure it was written in history.
It’s a good dang thing he’s in the place he is today & we don’t have some knucklehead trying to run the show.
Operation Epic Fury couldn’t have had a better Sec. State!
Twenty years ago we invaded Iraq. The war killed many innocent Iraqis and Americans. It destroyed the oldest Christian populations in the world. It cost over $1 trillion, and turned Iraq into a satellite of Iran. It was an unforced disaster, and I pray that we learn its lessons.

Nigeria really needs to merge all taxes and levies collected in the informal economy and find a way to digitize collections. This would arguably shut down the conduit for corruption by collection officials. What a report by @moniepointng.👏

@Mattihaphyz@jmait_aa@hackSultan To get into Google as a recent or upcoming grad, one of the key things their recruiters look out for is a strong GPA, albeit not the only thing. Here is what Google recruiters themselves said: https://t.co/ktS4L0vbcx
The richest man in Africa, seated on a panel with the CEO of TotalEnergies, said he needs 35 visas to travel on the continent, whereas the Frenchman doesn't need all those by virtue of his French passport, and invests easily.
Dangote is also asked for bank statements 😅
@SirJarus Very true. DRC has some of the worst hotels of them all. You’d book a $100 dollar per night room and it will seem to you that you just booked a NGN 10,000 motel.
