Here is a more objective analysis of the cost of the Diamond DA 42 twin-engine piston aircraft, also known as the DA 42 MNG, DA 42 MN-G, or DA 42 M-NG:

1. Purpose: Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance (ISR).

2. Both aircraft are new and arrived as CDK (Completely Knocked Down). I observed the cargo sometime around June 2026 at one of the NAF hangars in Lagos. It is a light aircraft and was not designed for intercontinental flight, hence the need for a knockdown shipment option.

3. The manufacturer is Diamond Aircraft Industries (a subsidiary of Wanfeng Aviation in China), with production facilities in Austria, Canada, and China.

4. a. The base or standard price of a new aircraft typically ranges from $800k to $1.3 million ex-factory (before options).

4. b. A fully equipped DA 42 BNMG/MPP ISR surveillance variant generally costs between $2 million and $3.4 million per aircraft.

Please check the manufacturer's website for more details. Note that the order for these aircraft was placed approximately one year ago, when the exchange rate was between ₦1,550 and ₦1,553 to $1, depending on the exact date the Form M (SGD) was opened.

5. The average weight of the aircraft is 1,420 kg, with a take-off weight of 1,990 kg. The cargo was shipped from the manufacturer's headquarters in China. The cost of packing, local shipment, and freight to Lagos, Nigeria, is as follows: Cargo freight from Shanghai to Lagos is $5.5 to $8 per kg.

For the two aircraft, weighing approximately 3,000 kg, the total freight cost is about $18,000. Other logistical costs are excluded.

6. Under ECOWAS CET, most aircraft and helicopters (HS 8802) attract a 5% duty based on CIF. Oyo State might be able to secure an exemption certificate on duty payments, as the aircraft are for surveillance purposes. This could be one reason for the delay in releasing the cargo. Additionally, other charges such as CIS, levies, and VAT have been reinstated under the new tax law effective from 1 January 2026. OSG will pay these.

7. Cost of assembly and after-sales:

Considering all the above, the cost of ₦3 billion per aircraft, as claimed by the OSG, aligns with the true cost according to the manufacturer, except for any undisclosed issues that might undermine the option and other specifications of the DA 42 twin-engine turbo aircraft.
