One of the most useful ways I've used AI has nothing to do with work.
If you're a parent of a child with autism or another neurodevelopmental condition, you've probably heard of social stories.
They're used to prepare children for new situations by showing, step by step, what will happen and what to expect.
Creating them well takes time. Every child is different. Every situation is different.
So I wondered: could ChatGPT create them?
After quite a bit of prompting, it turns out the answer is yes.
Now I can generate personalised, printable social stories for things like:
✈️ Flying
🏥 Hospital visits
🦷 Dentist appointments
🏫 Starting school
🎢 Theme parks
...or almost any new experience.
For our family, it's been genuinely useful.
I've shared the prompt below in case it helps other parents, teachers or therapists create their own.
Maybe this could be a new template on images, @OpenAI.
Create a high-quality printable A4 portrait social story for a child.
Use a calm Scandinavian design with a white background, rounded panels, soft muted colours, plenty of white space and a clean, predictable layout.
The page should look like it was professionally designed by a special education teacher—not like separate AI-generated images placed together.
Use one consistent semi-realistic children's book illustration style throughout the entire page. All characters must remain identical in every panel with consistent clothing, proportions and facial features.
Write the story using short, child-friendly sentences and illustrate every step. Each panel should contain:
• a short heading
• a simple illustration
• 1–3 short sentences
Keep the tone reassuring, predictable and positive.
Use the following characters:
Adult 1:
Haircolor: XX
Gender: XX
Adult 2:
Haircolor: XX
Gender: XX
Child 1:
Haircolor: XX
Gender: XX
Child 2:
Haircolor: XX
Gender: XX

## Important
Don't only describe what happens.
Think about which parts of the situation might be confusing, unfamiliar or overwhelming for a child with autism or other neurodevelopmental differences.
Explain those moments in a calm, reassuring and concrete way.
Include things that neurotypical adults often take for granted, such as:
- waiting
- taking turns
- loud noises
- unexpected announcements
- wearing a seatbelt
- staying seated
- following instructions
- long queues
- transitions between activities
- unfamiliar people
- security checks
- bright lights
- changes in routine
If relevant, repeat important rules or expectations more than once throughout the story to help reinforce them.
Now create a social story based on this:
