Members further highlighted that underemployment was just as urgent a concern, with many youth surviving on low-paying, informal jobs that neither match their qualifications nor offer security. They emphasized that the lack of access to dignified and sustainable employment options continues to discourage the youth and fuels poverty, migration to urban slums, and vulnerability to exploitation. They called for the redesign of youth skilling programs to be linked directly to employment pipelines and local economic needs in the subregion. #YouthParliamentUG
The Busoga Subregional Youth Parliament successfully concluded with powerful youth-led deliberations and resolutions aimed at tackling some of the most pressing challenges affecting young people in the region. Over the course of the session, youth leaders debated and passed motions urging the Government of Uganda to:
1. Address the rising levels of unemployment and underemployment.
2. Improve access to start-up capital to support youth entrepreneurship.
3. Enhance the availability and quality of medical services, especially youth-friendly and sexual reproductive health services.
4. And invest in accessible, affordable, and inclusive education to reduce school dropouts, especially among girls affected by poverty and early pregnancies.
The Parliament also highlighted systemic issues such as underfunded health facilities like Jinja Regional Referral Hospital, menstrual poverty, limited grassroots civic participation, and the need for youth inclusion in service delivery monitoring.
These resolutions will form part of a petition presented to the Speaker of the Parliament of Uganda, echoing the unified voice of Busoga’s youth demanding policy reform, equitable resource allocation, and meaningful engagement in national development.
The Busoga Subregional #YouthParliamentUG once again reaffirmed that young people are not just beneficiaries of development but key drivers of democratic governance, innovation, and social transformation in Uganda.
One of the key motions being debated today urges the government to address youth unemployment, promote access to start-up capital, and enhance youth inclusion in electoral processes. Young people are demanding meaningful opportunities and representation. #YouthParliamentUG
