@NateSilver538 I think the issue is some strategic laziness (presumably to minimize compute), I find Claude asserting all kinds of stuff before I push it to manually verify, upon which it actually looks at what it's meant to analyze and self-corrects
@Chris_arnade George W. Bush jr. talked about the "soft bigotry of low expectations", which I feel applies here. Compassion does not mean letting people getting away with everything, sometimes it means intervening and expecting more (while helping/encouraging)
@Chris_arnade I remember I used to love reading - until I got a smartphone in HS. It's not that I didn't want to read, it's that I felt like I couldn't focus anymore. Audiobooks were my "solve" - I have ~700 hours listened on Audible, and now I'm slowly learning to get back into reading
@Chris_arnade I agree that we *as society* should be less tolerant of certain norm-breaking - I don't think *the government* is in any way morally equipped to police this right now though (at least in the US).
@Chris_arnade But then doesnt any free speech limitation imply a role for the state as moral arbitrator by definition? To me this is a reason to be in favor of wide free speech, where it is up to society to correct speech that goes out of moral boundaries.
Seems to me that much of the fertility decline is down to young couples today not even being able to afford the requisite 280 kilos of solid silver needed for Napoleon II's cradle
@Chris_arnade My point is that while high trust culture definitly enables urban policy, good urban policy might similarly increase interpersonal trust. To me the bigger problem is overly idealized and out of touch urban policy in general
@Chris_arnade Sure, but isn’t this also a somewhat chicken and egg discussion? Like if the nyc subways would be cleaned up and invested in, I’d imagine culture what shift as well (a little)
