I'll never forget talking to her mother after Miriam had died. She worried that when she came home from the fields and hugged Miriam without changing her clothes if she could have given her daughter the leukemia that killed her. It just breaks my heart.

This story that haunts me. Cesar had had me in charge of the cancer families. I remember Miriam telling me she wanted to be a nurse so she could help other children. Instead I was at her funeral. She was 12. It's time to control pesticides & stop using farmworker kids as canaries

In the old days, miners would carry birds with them to warn against poison gas. Hopefully, the birds would die before the miners. Farm workers are society's canaries. Farm workers-and their children-demonstrate the effects of pesticide poisoning before anyone else. - #CesarChavez
