COPPER CABLE THIEVES SENT TO JAIL
Seven Zimbabwean nationals; Tatenda Mutanda (29), Simon Sithole (36), Phillip Chatenhedza (35), Prosper Chiwanda (32), Tiwashe Miziri (40), Themba Dube (39), and Kamokeni Chikuse (43) were sentenced to 10 years imprisonment each for theft and damage of material forming part of essential infrastructure belonging to Eskom.
Mutanda, Chatenhedza, Chiwanda, Dube, and Chikuse were sentenced to a further 12 months imprisonment for being in South Africa illegally.
The sentencing was handed by the Bloemfontein Magistrates Court on Thursday, 20 August 2026.
The accused were intercepted on the N6 by members of Bloemfontein Flying Squad on Sunday, 20 November 2022.
Information had been received about a group of suspects travelling from Eastern Cape towards Bloemfontein in two vehicles, truck and a VW Polo.
Upon searching the truck, copper estimated over R100 000 was found. A transformer with damages worth about R2.5 million was also recovered.
Free State Head of the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (Hawks), Major General Mokgadi Bokaba commended all role players involved for reacting to the information, successfully opposing bail, ensuring a thorough investigation, and securing the sentence.
