250 years ago today, the first amphibious landing occurred.
At the outset of 1776, Continental Marines under the command of Captain Samuel Nicholas carried out the first amphibious landing in the history of the newly formed corps of Marines during the Battle of Nassau.
Leading approximately 200 #Marines and @USNavy #Sailors ashore, Nicholas seized key British positions and secured valuable cannons, munitions, and other military supplies.
The operation not only strengthened the Continental war effort but also demonstrated that the young nation possessed both the resolve and the capability to carry the fight for independence beyond its shores.

Early Tuesday morning, the FDNY responded to a fatal 2-alarm fire at 520 Mac Donough Street in Brooklyn. One person was pronounced dead at the scene.
"Upon arrival, units encountered heavy fire in the first, second and third floor as well as in the roof. Our units quickly stretched multiple handlines, aggressively searched and extinguished the fire after it was a second alarm. We had 25 units, approximately 120 people," said Deputy Chief Chuck Downey.
The fire was placed under control at 1:09 a.m.
FDNY Fire Marshals are working to determine the cause of the fire.
