One of the people I quietly study from a distance is Elon Musk.
Not because he is perfect. Not because I agree with everything he says. But because of the way his mind approaches problems.
Most people start businesses to make money.
Elon Musk seems to start companies to solve problems that affect the future of humanity.
Look at the pattern closely.
When he believed humanity needed a transition away from fossil fuels, he built Tesla, Inc. to accelerate electric cars.
When he believed space exploration had become too slow and too expensive, he created SpaceX to drastically reduce the cost of rockets and make humanity a multi-planetary species.
When he thought traffic congestion would choke modern cities, he launched The Boring Company to rethink underground transport.
When he believed artificial intelligence and brain-machine integration could change medicine and human capability, he started Neuralink.
Whether people like him or not, one thing is hard to deny:
He thinks in decades, not in quarters.
While many people focus on what will trend next year, he focuses on what humanity may need in the next 50–100 years.
That way of thinking fascinates me.
He studies problems from first principles. Then he challenges industries people assumed could never change. And he builds teams capable of attempting things that sound impossible at first.
Of course he makes mistakes. Some of his ideas fail. But history tends to remember the people who were bold enough to attempt the future before everyone else could see it.
For me, the lesson is simple:
Don’t just chase opportunities.
Try to understand which problems are worth solving for the future of humanity. For the future of businesses, whether small, medium or large scale businesses.
Try to invest in things that can pay you on the long term. That “now now” mentality cannot really take you anywhere.
The biggest achievement in life often goes to people think long term first.
