For six years Scotland had no king, and it did not fall apart. That is one of the strangest and least told things in our history.
Alexander III went off a cliff at Kinghorn in a storm in March 1286, and every one of his children was already dead. What was left was a small granddaughter in Norway, Margaret, the Maid of Norway. A medieval kingdom in that position normally dissolved into a war between whoever had the most men.
Scotland did something else. Within weeks a parliament at Scone appointed six Guardians to govern in the name of the community of the realm, two bishops, two earls and two barons, deliberately balanced between the rival factions. They were not regents for a person. They governed for the kingdom itself, and they sealed their documents with Saint Andrew on his cross and a legend calling on him to be the leader of the Scots, his fellow countrymen.
They held it together for four years. In 1290 they negotiated the Treaty of Birgham, which agreed that Margaret would marry Edward of England but insisted, clause after careful clause, that Scotland would remain separate and free and divided from England by its right marches. They were preparing for a union of crowns and guarding in advance against exactly what it might cost. Then Margaret died on the voyage from Norway, and the Guardians were left holding a kingdom with a crowd of competing claimants and no one to put on the throne
What came next was Edward, and Wallace, and thirty years of war. But the idea survived all of it. The community of the realm, the notion that a kingdom is a thing in its own right and not simply the property of whoever is wearing the crown, went from those six men straight into the Declaration of Arbroath and onward into arguments still being had today.
