I said I’d do politics differently. So these are the facts:

The UK has seen the lowest number of summer small boat arrivals since 2020.

We’ve returned more than 80,000 people with no right to be here – and annual returns are at their highest level since 2016.

There are half the number of asylum seekers in hotels than there were last year.

And today, we go further by bringing the total number of deployed French officers tackling small boat crossings to nearly 1,050.

But I know that we can’t be complacent on this.

Smuggling gangs are constantly adapting their tactics, and we need to respond quickly and stay one step ahead of the criminals facilitating dangerous crossings.

The small boats crisis is a shared European challenge, and no country can solve it alone. Working with France and our international partners, we will restore order and control to our borders and prevent smugglers exploiting vulnerable migrants.

I've long thought the core distinction between liberalism and right-wing postliberalism comes down to empathy, the capacity to see something happen to someone else and imagine how it would feel if it were done to you.

That's why resist libs get so aggressive in the face of injustice. They don't treat injustice against an outgroup as someone else's problem. They feel it as injustice against themselves.

It's a shame the MAGA brain can only manage it once the teeth are already digging in.

You can argue, if you want, that a nuclear deterrent is necessary to keep us “safe” — and many would rightly disagree.

But it is completely false to suggest that arms manufacturing is re-industrialisation and thus “good for the economy” — all evidence suggests spending that same budget amount on education, infrastructure, green transition, or health would be far more economically productive with much more significant fiscal multiplier effects.

The arms industry is highly capital intensive, automated, and has low levels of secondary economic impacts.

22,000 apprenticeships is nothing compared to the jobs that could be created by investing that same amount of money in pretty much any other productive sector.
