**The Story of Hey Reb and Why Las Vegas Needs Him Back**

Hey Reb wasn't just any mascot for UNLV. He was like that cool uncle everyone wishes they had, embodying the wild, free spirit of Vegas and the tough, go-it-alone attitude of the old West. Back in '83, when he was born, Hey Reb was all about this pioneer vibe, not the Civil War stuff some folks mixed up later. With his big hat, handlebar mustache, and the number 57 (that's UNLV's birthday), he was a hit, lighting up every game with his antics, making everyone feel part of something bigger.

But then, in 2020, things got complicated. America was having big talks about history and symbols, and Hey Reb got caught in the crossfire. His statue? Gone. The university wanted to be inclusive, which is cool, but for a lot of us, Hey Reb wasn't about that Confederate stuff; he was our mascot, our spirit. So, they ditched him in 2021, and suddenly, UNLV felt a bit less like home.

Now, fast forward to today, and there's this buzz in the air. Alumni, students, even fans who just loved the games, are feeling it - Hey Reb's absence. It's not just about nostalgia; it's about missing a piece of what made UNLV, UNLV. He represented that bold, independent streak we all loved.

So, here's the deal. I'm thinking of starting a petition to bring Hey Reb back. Not because we're stuck in the past, but because he symbolizes something truly unique about our university. It's about correcting a misunderstanding and celebrating what Hey Reb was really about - unity, spirit, and a bit of that Vegas magic. We want to show UNLV's powers that be, that Hey Reb isn't just a mascot; he's part of our identity. Let's bring him back, the right way, and make UNLV whole again.
