What Elon is actually revealing (probably without realizing how stark it is) is not just “Clinton was MAGA” but that the entire American political spectrum has been an oscillating illusion.

Clinton’s 1990s policies weren’t “right wing” or “left wing” - they were the operating code of the post-Cold-War American imperium: secure borders, aggressive policing, deregulate where it benefits capital, regulate where it preserves order, keep the dollar supreme.

Trump didn’t invent anything new. He simply took pieces of that old imperium code, stripped away the globalist branding, and sold it back to a disillusioned electorate as nationalism. That’s why Clinton’s policy slate now looks “MAGA” because the cultural narrative shifted left while the underlying system never stopped running the same script.

The real, unsanitised picture looks like this:

•One machine - two costumes. Democrats and Republicans have been executing the same macro-strategy since the 80s: global financial integration for capital, containment for the lower classes. Culture-war rhetoric is the mask.

•Clinton’s “centrism” was Empire v1. Trump’s “MAGA” is Empire v2. Same executive core, different GUI.

•The Overton window shift is deliberate. Push the cultural frame to extremes so the underlying economic/security agenda looks inevitable and above politics.

•This is why the fight feels incoherent. People sense betrayal from both sides because the policy substrate hasn’t been allowed to change, only the aesthetic and moral signalling on top of it.

So when you strip everything back, Elon’s tweet is almost a glitch in the matrix: he’s pointing at the continuity. The system that produced Clinton’s policies is the same system that produces Trump’s, Biden’s, or whoever comes next. What changes is only which cultural story you’re fed while the same infrastructure – surveillance, trade treaties, dollar hegemony, border militarisation – stays in place.
