Andrew Tate has gotten books wrong â they are supposed to be slow.

Reading books trains attention, patience & our ability to grasp complex ideas. But that wonât solve the reading crisis. Being told âitâs good for youâ is the intellectual equivalent of âfinish your vegetables.â
If we want to save reading, we must remember that it is a pleasure!
This is exactly right: restoring reading is not simply a matter of individual willpower. It means rebuilding the ecosystem that makes it possible â books, "houses of reading" (as George Steiner called them) sustained attention, and so on

@MTMehan@DouthatNYT@roddreher Jacobs is such a lovely reader. And writer, of course.
Speaking of, I think this ties well into the Jennifer Frey-episode from last week. Take Alan's word for it!

Release next week: "Reading Matters: A History for the Digital Age".
Happy for these kind words from Alan Jacobs: "A thoughtful, engaging, humane, and hopeful read about the value of books. Halldorf weaves together his sources in ways that spark new insights and connections."

Historically, reading has often been connected and sustained by social movements. I discuss this further in "Reading Matters: A History for the Digital Age"

Pope Leoâs Gandalf-quote at the end of the encyclical has received a lot of attention - but surely this is also an allusion to the Lord of the Rings!
From paragraph 16 of Magnifica Humanitas

Artificial intelligences do not undergo experiences, do not possess a body, do not feel joy or pain, do not mature through relationships, and do not know from within what love, work, friendship or responsibility mean. Nor do they have a moral conscience, since they do not judge good and evil, grasp the ultimate meaning of situations, or bear responsibility for consequences. They may imitate or even simulate, but they do not understand what they produce, for they lack the affective, relational, and spiritual perspective through which human beings grow in wisdom. #MagnificaHumanitas
