Drilling in the Arctic releases greenhouse gases by drilling, but also by changing the landscape and thawing permafrost. These are only some of the environmental impacts that must be considered - and the economic benefits may not ever be realized as climate change picks up.
Beneath Area 1002 of the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge, there is a 900 to 2,000 foot permafrost-carbon deposit. Estimates indicate that 10-20 lbs of carbon per square foot of surface area resides within the uppermost 10 feet of this permafrost layer.
