"Russians told us: if you try to escape, we’ll shoot you in the knees": Ukrainian teenagers abducted by Russia spoke in the Senate of Spain
Spanish Senate President Pedro Rollán Ojeda expressed support for Ukraine and stressed the need to return more than 20,000 children deported by Russia.
The officially confirmed number of Ukrainian children deported and forcibly displaced by Russia stands at no fewer than 19,546. However, the real figure may be significantly higher.
Particular attention at the hearing was given to testimony from Ukrainian teenagers who survived deportation and occupation. Their stories became a key argument against Russia’s narrative of "evacuation" and "liberation."
Ivan Matkovskyi from Mariupol described witnessing one of the most cynical crimes committed by Russian forces - the destruction of the Mariupol Drama Theatre, where civilians had been sheltering:
▪️ "Every time I talk about it, I see all those people I saw back then. There were people of all ages - kids, animals, elderly people who couldn’t even walk; they could only sit or lie down. There were thousands of civilians.
But despite the fact that only civilians were there, on March 16 a Russian aircraft dropped an aerial bomb on the theater, destroying it. After that, my older brother and I decided to leave Mariupol on foot for territory controlled by Ukraine."
▪️ "I saw Mariupol being destroyed... I lost 10 kilograms - we just wanted to eat and drink."
Another episode - "filtration" at a checkpoint:
▪️ "Russians forced me to undress. They examined my body to see if I had any tattoos with Ukrainian symbols - anything they could use to detain me."
After that, Ivan was separated from his family. Russian military threatened him and his brother with weapons in case of disobedience:
▪️ "We were told to wait for officials from the children’s services in occupied Donetsk to come for us. We tried to escape, but they began threatening us with weapons. They said that if we ran, they would shoot us in the knees."
In Donetsk, according to Ivan, Ukrainian children were promised a new life in Russia:
▪️ "They told me I would have a new family and a Russian passport."
Moreover, the children were forbidden from contacting their relatives and were effectively being prepared for transfer to Russian families or camps. No one cared that they already had families and biological parents.
Russia seeks to portray the deportation of children as a humanitarian measure. But testimonies like these dismantle that narrative, showing that this is a systematic policy of deportation, assimilation, and stripping children of their identity - one that is already being classified as an international crime.
@TfL my friend is waiting for the 58 bus from Walthamstow Central (heading to East Ham), the timer has been changing for about 45 mins with no bus, is there an issue?
@CoopyJ @pop_underrated 100% this! The Heidi brigade are some of the most annoying people on the internet and need to let it go. Heidi was in the band a long time and worked hard but she was still with the A&J when the originals got back together, who have been working their socks off for years!
