When Liverpool spent £75 million on van Dijk, it was worth every penny. He's won many trophies in his time at LFC. When Man United spent £80 on Antony, it make them weaker and they've struggled to get him out the door ever since. That's how value should be measured.

I've always believed it's about the success - in several ways - that money spent gives you. For example, West Ham have been big spenders over the last 8 years and have had little success (minus one trophy). United have wasted SO much money, as have Chelsea.
