Sean Connery also turned down MATRIX (he was going to be Morpheus) and LORD OF THE RINGS (Gandalf!). But then he did LEAGUE OF EXTRAORDINARY GENTLEMEN, which underperformed. Could you imagine MATRIX starring Will Smith and Connery?

Will Smith’s list of movies he almost made is honestly one of the more interesting alternate timelines in Hollywood.

THE MATRIX is still the craziest. Smith was offered Neo, didn’t really connect with the Wachowskis’ pitch and passed. He made WILD WILD WEST instead. Keanu Reeves got the part, and Smith has openly admitted he regrets turning THE MATRIX down.

Then there’s DJANGO UNCHAINED. Tarantino reportedly wrote the role with Smith in mind, but Smith ultimately passed after having creative differences over the story. Jamie Foxx got the role and absolutely owned it.

But the rabbit hole goes much deeper.

Smith was linked to INCEPTION, SNAKE EYES, SHAFT, PHONE BOOTH, BATMAN FOREVER, A STAR IS BORN, OLD BOY and TRIPLE FRONTIER at different points, with some being serious casting possibilities and others coming from early reports or abandoned versions of those projects.

And some of these are genuinely strange to picture. Will Smith as Neo. Will Smith in a Tarantino movie. Will Smith as John Shaft. Will Smith in a Spielberg version of OLD BOY.

He ended up having a huge career anyway, but his rejected roles might be the most fascinating part of it.

@MayKarlenAuthor If you think about it, don’t most things happen “suddenly”? Maybe they’re premeditated, maybe they’ve been on the verge of happening for years, but they nonetheless happen “suddenly,” which is why I tend to avoid the word in my own writing.

@TimothyEveland Have you considered that there may be a compelling reason why the Laestrygonians look like this in Nolan’s Odyssey? I was disappointed to see the steel armor too, but I’m willing to withhold judgment until I see the finished product.
